This operation
represents a further step in the work on population projections that
the EUSTAT has been carrying out periodically. Up to now population
projections had been limited to short and medium terms, with a maximum
time scale of fifteen years. The population perspectives that are presented
today extend this limit to fifty five years and advance the size and
what the population is likely to be like half way through the century
we have just begun, as well as the possible demographic itineraries
that will have to be taken to reach this date. It is clear that extending
the time scale considerably increases the uncertainty about the evolution
of the demographic phenomena involved in population growth, for this
reason seven alternative population perspectives are offered, each of
them being the result of combining different demographic hypotheses
that were considered plausible with regard to these phenomena, i.e.
fertility, mortality and migrations. In this sense, the seven perspectives
are considered equally feasible as they provide an alternative of the
population evolution which is coherent with the demographic presuppositions
on which they have been based.

Panorama of the Information
Society
The objective is to provide political leaders and
planners together with economic and social agents with a systemized,
comprehensive and accurate flow of information on one of the most
passionate changes at the end of the 20th century: the creation
of a new setting which covers and integrates economic, social and
cultural aspects of society and is maerialised in a series of technological
elements associated with communication and information.
Eustat posed the division of research in three sections: the family
as a basic nucleus of personal relationships and the centre of socialization
and cultural transmission; the company, as the support for society;
and, finally, the administration as a regulating element, promoter
and intermediary between the rest of the economic and social agents.
In order to cover these three sections, a statistical operation was set up including a
survey directed at families carried out the second and fourth quarter of the year,
another survey focused on companies, which was annual, and the treatment of information
gathered from the setup of the Get Connected (Konekta Zaitez) programme, a campaign to
subsidise the purchase of personal computers connected to the Internet and directed
at families.
