SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. August 2024
Overnight stays rose by 16.1% in tourist apartments and were down 3.7% in rural accommodation in the Basque Country in August 2024
Overnight stays in tourist hostels increased by 7.5%
Visitor numbers in rural accommodation in the Basque Country fell by 5.4% in August 2024 in respect of the same month of the previous year, and overnight stays dropped by 3.7%, according to Eustat data. With these year-on-year variations, in August the number of visitors reached 25,471 and the number of overnight stays stood at 94,663.

After falling by 2.1% in relation to August of the previous year, visitors from abroad accounted for 26.4% of the total number of visitors in Basque Country rural accommodation in August 2024. Meanwhile, as regards overnight stays, those by visitors from abroad represented 22.7% of the total, following an increase of 1.0% compared to August 2023.
By province, visitors numbers rose by 7.4% in Álava. In contrast, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa registered decreases of 8.6% and 7.3%, respectively. As regards overnight stays, they were up 1.2% in Gipuzkoa, while in Álava there was a year-on-year fall in overnight stays of 12.9% and a drop of 6.9% in Bizkaia.
The average length of stay in this type of establishment in the Basque Country was 3.72 days during the month of August, above the 3.65 days average length of stay observed in the same month of 2023. The average length of stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers remain in each of the establishments where they stay overnight, and not the total length of their stay in the Basque Country.
Bed and room occupancy rates experienced a year-on-year decrease of 1.1 and 0.7 percentage points, respectively, the bed occupancy rate standing at 64.5% and that of rooms at 70.1%.
In relation to tourist apartments, in August 2024 there was a total of 31,589 visitors, giving rise to 96,710 overnight stays. Comparing this data with that of the previous August, the increase reached 20.9% in the case of visitor numbers and 16.1% in that of overnight stays.
Each of the accommodation units offered under a business operating unit, managed under the block or combined mode, is referred to as a tourist apartment. Private dwellings offered, marketed or temporarily relinquished for reasons of tourism are not included under the heading of dwellings for tourism use.

Visitors from abroad accounted for 47.2% of the total number of visitors and 43.4% of the total number of overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country, after registering year-on-year increases of 38.0% and 28.8%, respectively, during August.
The average length of stay in tourist apartments was 3.06 days in August 2024, below that obtained in August 2023, which stood at 3.19 days for the Basque Country as a whole. The average length of stay in this type of establishment was 8.02 days in Álava, 3.51 days in Gipuzkoa and 2.48 days in Bizkaia.
The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 59.5%, up 3.8 percentage points on that observed in August 2023. In contrast, the apartment occupancy rate increased by 6.3 percentage points to stand at 78.6%.
In respect of tourist hostels in the Basque Country, in August 2024 there was a year-on-year increase of 15.2% in visitor numbers, reaching a total of 39,102 visitors who generated 66,323 overnight stays. 40,069 overnight stays were registered in Bizkaia, 25,002 in Gipuzkoa and lastly, in Álava, the number of overnight stays was 1,253.

In August 2024, the average length of stay in this type of accommodation was 1.70 days in the Basque Country as a whole and the bed occupancy rate, after a year-on-year increase of 3.4 percentage points, stood at 61.3%.
