Visitor numbers and overnight stays registered in rural accommodation in the Basque Country in June 2022 increased by 55.2% and 59.9%, respectively

In tourist apartments, increases in visitor numbers and overnight stays more than doubled those of the previous year

In June 2022, visitor numbers and overnight stays in rural accommodation in the Basque Country rose to 16,127 and 38,285, respectively. These figures translate into year-on-year increases of 55.2% and 59.9%, respectively, according to Eustat data.

Spain was the origin of 78.9% of visitors and 76.0% of overnight stays registered at rural accommodation in the Basque Country in June 2022. However, as in previous months, there was particularly significant growth in numbers and overnight stays of visitors from abroad, with 2,679 more visitors and 7,686 more overnight stays registered than in June of the previous year.

Year-on-year increases in June 2022 for visitor numbers and overnight stays in Álava were 56.9% and 47.0%, respectively. In Bizkaia, visitor numbers were up by 105.2% and overnight stays increased by 79.4%. Lastly, in Gipuzkoa the increases obtained in relation to June 2021 stood at 33.0% for visitor numbers and 55.2% for overnight stays.

The average length of stay in this type of establishment was 2.37 days in June 2022, slightly above the 2.30 days observed in the same month of 2021.

Bed and room occupancy rates experienced a year-on-year increase of 8.9 and 10.1 percentage points, respectively, the bed occupancy rate standing at 27.8% and that of rooms at 32.7%.

As regards tourist apartments, in June 2022 visitor numbers and overnight stays totalled 14,498 and 49,394, respectively. In relation to June of the previous year, the year-on-year increase in visitor numbers stood at 139.2% and that of overnight stays at 106.6%.

The number of visitors from abroad represented 38.2% of the total number of visitors and 39.6% of overnight stays at tourist apartments in the Basque Country in June 2022, following some significant year-on-year increases of 4,753 in the number of foreign visitors and 14,913 in overnight stays.

The average length of stay for this type of establishment was 3.41 days in June 2022, below that obtained in June 2021, which stood at 3.94 days.

At provincial level, the average length of stay in June 2022 was over 6 days in Álava and 4.91 days in Gipuzkoa, while in Bizkaia it stood at 2.33 days.

The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 38.5%, representing an increase of 15.4 percentage points in relation to June 2021. The apartment occupancy rate, following a year-on-year rise of 22.3 percentage points, stood at 65.5%.

Notes

The response rate of the Survey on Tourist Establishments in June 2022 was 92.3% for Rural Accommodation and 85.6% for Tourist Apartments.
