SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. July 2022
Visitor numbers and overnight stays registered in rural accommodation in the Basque Country in July 2022 increased by 27.7% and 19.6%, respectively
In tourist apartments, visitor numbers increased by 76.7% and overnight stays by 54.8%
Visitor numbers and overnight stays in rural accommodation in the Basque Country in July 2022 rose to 24,385 and 72,040 respectively, meaning a year-on-year increase of 27.7% and 19.6%, according to Eustat data. As regards July 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2,914 visitors and 7,578 overnight stays were registered.

Spain was the origin of 70.4% of visitors and 72.2% of overnight stays registered at rural accommodation in the Basque Country in July 2022. However, as in previous months, there was particularly significant growth in numbers and overnight stays of visitors from abroad, with 5,025 more visitors and 14,425 more overnight stays registered than in July of the previous year.
Year-on-year increases in July 2022 for visitor numbers and overnight stays in Álava were 27.3% and 12.4%, respectively. In Bizkaia, visitor numbers were up by 53.0% and overnight stays increased by 35.6%. Lastly, in Gipuzkoa the increases obtained in relation to July 2021 stood at 12.6% for visitor numbers and 13.4% for overnight stays.
The average length of stay at this type of establishment was 2.95 days in July 2022, lower than the 3.15 days observed in the same month of 2021.
Bed and room occupancy rates experienced a year-on-year increase of 5.1 and 6.0 percentage points respectively, the bed occupancy rate standing at 48.7% and that of rooms at 53.1%.
As regards tourist apartments, in July 2022, visitor numbers and overnight stays totalled 19,070 and 60,449, respectively. In relation to July of the previous year, the year-on-year increase in visitor numbers stood at 76.7% and that of overnight stays at 54.8%. As regards July 2019, prior to COVID-19, and increase of 8,126 visitors and 20,813 overnight stays can be observed.

The number of visitors from abroad represented 44.0% of the total number of visitors and 41.0% of overnight stays at tourist apartments in the Basque Country in July 2022, following some significant year-on-year increases of 5,903 in the number of visitors and 16,134 in overnight stays by people from abroad.
The average length of stay for this type of establishment was 3.17 days in July 2022, below that obtained in July 2021, which stood at 3.62 days.
At provincial level, the average length of stay in July 2022 stood at 5.84 days in Álava, 3.97 days in Gipuzkoa, whereas in Bizkaia it was 2.44 days.
The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 45.8%, representing an increase of 10.0 percentage points when compared to July 2021. The apartment occupancy rate, following a year-on-year rise of 12.3 percentage points, stood at 62.6%.

The response rate of the Survey on Tourist Establishments in July 2022, was 90.7% for Rural Accommodation and 80.0% for Tourist Apartments.
