SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. May 2022
Visitor numbers and overnight stays registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in May 2022 once again stood above pre-COVID-19 figures
The year-on-year increases were particularly significant for rural accommodation: 211.5% in the case of visitors and 171.7% for overnight stays
In May 2022, visitor numbers and overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country rose to 10,291 and 40,323, respectively, according to Eustat data. Both figures are higher than those observed in May 2019, prior to COVID-19.
Rural accommodation in the Basque Country registered 14,341 visitors and 30,505 overnight stays May 2022, figures that translate into year-on-year increases of 211.5% and 171.7%, respectively. In May 2019, prior to COVID-19, visitor numbers stood at 15,688 and overnight stays reached 33,288.

Spain was the origin of 73.5% of visitors and 77.0% of overnight stays registered at rural accommodation in the Basque Country in May 2022. However, as in previous months, there was particularly significant growth in numbers and overnight stays of visitors from abroad, with 3,505 more visitors and 6,130 more overnight stays registered than in May of the previous year.
Year-on-year increases in May 2022 for visitor numbers and overnight stays in Álava were 202.6% and 188.0%, respectively. In Bizkaia, visitor numbers were up by 231.9% and overnight stays increased by 157.0%. Lastly, in Gipuzkoa the increases obtained in relation to May 2021 stood at 203.7% for visitor numbers and 174.1% for overnight stays.
The average length of stay at this type of establishment was 2.13 days in May 2022, lower than the 2.44 days observed in the same month of 2021.
Bed and room occupancy rates experienced a year-on-year increase of 12.8 and 13.3 percentage points, respectively, the bed occupancy rate standing at 21.7% and that of rooms at 25.8%.
As regards tourist apartments, during May 2022 visitor numbers and overnight stays totalled 10,291 and 40,323, respectively. In relation to May of the previous year, the year-on-year increase in visitor numbers stood at 155.0% and that of overnight stays at 91.6%. In May 2019, prior to COVID, both visitor and overnight stay numbers were lower, standing at 7,523 and 26,548, respectively.

The number of visitors from abroad represented 36.3% of the total number of visitors and 36.9% of overnight stays at tourist apartments in the Basque Country in May 2022, following some significant year-on-year increases of 3,148 in the number of visitors and 10,702 in overnight stays.
The average length of stay for this type of establishment was 3.92 days in May 2022, below that obtained in May 2021, which stood at 5.22 days.
At provincial level, the average length of stay in May 2022 was longer than 6 days in Álava and Gipuzkoa, while in Bizkaia it stood at 2.32 days.
The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 33.4%, representing an increase of 13.7 percentage points in relation to May 2021. The apartment occupancy rate, following a year-on-year rise of 23.9 percentage points, stood at 66.2%.

The response rate of the Survey on Tourist Establishments in May 2022 was 96.5% for Rural Accommodation and 88.7% for Tourist Apartments.
