Visitor numbers to hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole in the Basque Country increased by 8.1% in January 2020.

The number of visitors registered in tourist apartments rose by 32.8%

In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there were 182,414 visitors in January 2020, which was an increase of 8.1% on the same month of the previous year, according to EUSTAT data.

47.6% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 8.1%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 38.7% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 8.3% and in Álava, with 13.7% of visitors, there was a rise of 7.7%.

Overnight stays in the Basque Country as a whole were up 5.2% in January 2020 compared to January 2019. Overnight stays increased 5.8% in Álava, while in Bizkaia they were up 2.3% and in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 8.7%.

Tourist apartments

There were 4,288 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in January 2020, which was a rise of 32.8% compared to the same month of the previous year. Visitor numbers were up 61.8% in Gipuzkoa, 26.3% in Bizkaia and were down slightly in Álava (-0.2%).

The number of overnight stays registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in January 2020 stood at 17,442, which was a decrease of 4.7% on those registered in January of the previous year. Overnight stays were down 15.4% in Álava, whereas they were up in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa by 1.3% and 2.0%, respectively.

This January the average length of stay was 4.07 days, below the average length of stay of 5.67 days registered in January 2019. In Álava there was a drop from 13.66 days last year to 11.58 days in January of this year; in Bizkaia it was down from 3.59 days to 2.88 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay decreased from 5.35 days in January 2019 to 3.37 days in January 2020.
