Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 28.7% in August 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 8.2% increase in overnight stays during August
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in August 2018 stood at 45,031, up 28.7% on those registered in August 2017, according to EUSTAT data.
There was a year-on-year positive trend in overnight stays in in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa they increased by 49.6%, in Álava they grew by 32.0% and in Bizkaia they were up by 12.3%.
Furthermore, there were 11,143 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in August 2018, which was a rise of 14.9%. By province, the number of visitors was up 60.2% in Gipuzkoa and 3.9% in Bizkaia, whereas there was a drop of 20.5% in Álava.
This August the average length of stay was 4.04 days, above the average length of stay of 3.61 days registered in August 2017. There were increases in Álava, up from 4.95 days last year to 8.21 days in August 2018, and Bizkaia, up from 2.84 days to 3.07 days. However, in Gipuzkoa the average length of stay was down from 4.49 days in August 2017 to 4.19 days in August 2018.
Tourist balance for August 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 388,888 visitors in August 2018, which was an increase of 6.3% on the same month of the previous year. 46.5% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 6.2%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 38.8% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 9.2% and in Álava, with 14.7% of visitors, there was a fall of 0.2%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 8.2%, with increases in all three provinces: 9.2% in Gipuzkoa, 8.2% in Bizkaia and 5.2% in Álava.
