Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 31.8% in May 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 11.5% increase in overnight stays in May
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in May 2018 stood at 24,909, up 31.8% on those registered in May 2017, according to EUSTAT data.
There was a year-on-year upward trend in overnight stays in in the three provinces: in Álava they increased by 38.6%, in Bizkaia they grew by 83.4% and in Gipuzkoa they were up by 0.3%.
On the other hand, there were 7,008 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in May 2018, which was a rise of 13.7%. By province, the number of visitors was up 96.9% in Álava and 26.2% in Gipuzkoa, whereas there was a drop of 8.8% in Bizkaia.
This May the average length of stay was 3.55 days, practically half a day above the average length of stay of 3.07 days registered in May 2017. In Álava there was a decrease from 7.80 days last year to 5.49 days in May of this year; in Bizkaia there was an increase from 2.57 days to 2.82 days; and finally in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay rose from 2.42 days in May 2017 to 3.51 days in May 2018.
Tourist balance for May 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 309,686 visitors in May 2018, which was an increase of 7.6% with respect to the same month of the previous year. 46.4% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 5.2%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 39.2% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 10.3% and in Álava, with 14.4% of visitors, there was a rise of 8.5%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 11.5%, with an increase of 14.3% in Gipuzkoa, 9.9% in Álava and 9.6% in Bizkaia.
