Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 59.1% in March 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 27.5% increase in overnight stays in March
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in March 2018 stood at 22,985, up 59.1% on those registered in March 2017, according to EUSTAT data. It should be taken into account when analysing these data that this year Easter fell in March, and last year it was in April.
There was a year-on-year upward trend in overnight stays in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa they more than doubled, in Álava they increased by 66.5% and in Bizkaia they were up by 23.1%.
On the other hand, there were 5,742 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in March 2018, which is a rise of 26.7%. By provinces, the number of visitors increased by 112.8% in Álava, 30.1% in Gipuzkoa, and 4.5% in Bizkaia.
This March the average length of stay was 4.00 days, above the average length of stay of 3.19 days that was registered in March 2017. In Álava there was a decrease from 8.76 days last year to 6.85 days in March of this year; in Bizkaia there was a rise from 2.67 days to 3.15 days; and finally in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay rose from 2.15 days in March 2017 to 3.49 days in March 2018.
Tourist balance for March 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 247,791 visitors in March 2018, which was an increase of 16.9% with respect to the same month of the previous year. 45.8% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 13.2%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 40.0% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 23.9% and in Álava, with 14.3% of visitors, there was a rise of 11.2%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 27.5%, with an increase of 33.6% in Gipuzkoa, a rise of 24.4% in Bizkaia and an increase of 21.6% Álava.
