Number of visitors to the Basque Country rose by 8% in June 2011
Overnight stays were also up by 6% compared to June 2010
There were 220,414 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in June 2011, 15,618 up on the same month of the previous year, in other words, an 8% increase, according to Eustat data. The number of visitors rose by 4% in Álava, 6% in Bizkaia and 12% in Gipuzkoa.
The number of visitors from within Spain was up by 6% and the number of overseas visitors rose by 11%. The number of visitors from within Spain increased in the three provinces: they were up by 7% in Álava, by 2% in Bizkaia and 10% in Gipuzkoa. The number of foreign visitors rose in Bizkaia, with an increase of 13% and was up by 15% in Gipuzkoa, but fell by 6% in Álava.
With regard to visitors from within Spain, there was a greater percentage increase in those from La Rioja, Aragón, Castila y León, Catalonia and from the Basque Autonomous Community, while those from Madrid, Andalusia, Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria, among others, fell in number. As far as foreign visitors were concerned, there was a rise in the number of visitors from France, Central and South America, Germany, USA-Canada and Italy, while there was a drop in the number from Portugal, Belgium, Finland and Greece.
Registered overnight stays in June 2011 totalled 405,514, which was 6% up on the same month of the previous year, in other words, there were 24,237 more overnight stays. The year-on-year performance of overnight stays was positive in the three provinces: it rose by 3% in Álava, by 5% in Bizkaia and by 9% in Gipuzkoa.
The average length of stay increased slightly compared to June 2010: it rose from an average stay of 1.87 days in June 2010 to 1.84 days in June this year, for the Basque Country overall. By provinces, it fell from 1.79 to 1.78 days in Álava, from 1.82 to 1.81 days in Gipuzkoa, while it rose from 1.96 to 1.91 days in Bizkaia.
The bed occupancy rate was up 5% to 50.38% in June 2011. It should be noted that this rise affected all three provinces. It rose by 5% in Álava, by 3% in Bizkaia. and it was up by 8% in Gipuzkoa. The bed occupancy rate in Álava rose from 41.51% in June 2010 to 43.53% in June 2011. It increased from 46.32% to 47.68% in Bizkaia and from 53.07% in Gipuzkoa in June 2010 to 57.25% in the same month of this year.
RURAL TOURISM
The number of visitors and of overnight stays increased by 16% in the Basque Country, compared to June 2010
The number of visitors in rural tourism establishments of the Basque Country totalled 11,919 in June, which was up by 16% with respect to the same month of the previous year, with positive results in Álava (13%) and Gipuzkoa (33%), while it fell by 3% in Bizkaia. The number of visitors from within Spain was up by 11% in the Basque Country: they rose by 7% in Álava, by 23% in Gipuzkoa and by 2% in Bizkaia. The number of overseas visitors increased by 73% throughout the Basque Country: it fell by 8% in Bizkaia, while it rose significantly in Álava and Gipuzkoa in percentage terms.
There were 28,332 overnight stays in rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country in June which was 16% up on the previous year, with year-on-year positive growth being recorded in Álava (30%) and Gipuzkoa (26%), while it fell by 6% in BIzkaia.
The average length of stay per visitor remained unchanged for the Basque Country overall with respect to June 2010, as the average stay per visitor was 2.38 days in both months. By provinces, there was a notable increase in Álava (15%) as the average stay per traveller rose from 2.10 days in June 2010 to 2.42 days in June this year. The average stay fell by 3% in Bizkaia from 2.28 days in June 2010 to 2.21 in June this year and there was also a 5% drop in Gipuzkoa, down from 2.59 days to 2.45 days in June 2011.
The bed occupancy rate rose by 13%, rising from 20.79% occupancy to 23.42%, as a result in the increase noted in the three provinces: Álava was up by 17% and by 14% in Gipuzkoa, while it fell by 6% in Bizkaia.
