Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 1.1% in September 2025


Compared to the previous month, sales rose by 1.4%


Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country saw an increase of 1.1% in September 2025 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.


Compared to the previous month (August 2025), sales at constant prices, once corrected for seasonal effects, rose by 1.4%.




The year-on-year evolution of sales was positive in the Food sector, with growth of 2.0%. However, in Other Products, sales were down 0.5% in respect of September 2024.


In month-on-month terms (September 2025 compared to August 2025), the evolution was positive in both the Food sector, with a rise of 1.8%, and in the Other Products sector, where the increase was 0.5%.

In September 2025, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 1.4% in Bizkaia and 1.1% in Gipuzkoa. In Álava, there was no year-on-year variation in sales.

In month-on-month terms, however, sales rose by 1.6% in Bizkaia, 1.3% in Gipuzkoa and 0.7% in Álava.

In the cumulative period of the first nine months of the year, sales in large stores and food chains increased by 0.7% compared to the same cumulative period of the previous year, reaching 1.4% in the case of Bizkaia. In Álava, however, they fell by 0.2%, and in Gipuzkoa they were down 0.1%.

Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.6% compared to September 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index recorded a rise of 0.5%. In the cumulative period until September, it increased by 1.8%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
