LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. AUGUST 2025
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 0.4% in August 2025
Compared to the previous month, sales also fell by 0.4%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose fell by 0.4% compared to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices once corrected for calendar effects. Compared to the previous month (July 2025), sales at constant prices, and once corrected for seasonal effects, were down 0.4%.
The year-on-year evolution of sales was positive in the Other Products sector, with an increase of 0.7%. However, in Food, sales were down 0.9% compared to August 2024.
In month-on-month terms (August 2025 compared to July 2025), the evolution was negative in both the Food sector, down 0.6%, and in the Other Products sector, where the decrease was 0.2%.

In August 2025, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 0.1% in Bizkaia. In Contrast, in Álava and Gipuzkoa sales were down 0.3% and 1.1%, respectively.
In month-on-month terms, sales increased by 0.5% in Álava and by 0.1% in Gipuzkoa. In Bizkaia, however, there was a decrease of 1.0%.
In the cumulative total for the first eight months of the year, sales in large stores and food chains increased by 0.6%, reaching 1.3% in the case of Bizkaia, compared to the same cumulative period of 2024. In Álava, however, there was decrease of 0.3% and in Gipuzkoa sales were down 0.2%.
Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.1% compared to August 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people recorded a rise of 0.5%. The cumulative total for the year until August registered an increase of 1.6%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
