Deaths in the Basque Country rose by 1% in the first quarter of 2025



The biggest increase was in February, with a 8.3% rise


In the first quarter of 2025 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 6,300, up 1% on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. By month, deaths fell in January and March, by 2.1% and 2%, and rose by 8.3% in February compared to 2024.






By province, in Álava, with a total of 854 deaths, there was the most significant comparative increase, of 6.1%. In Bizkaia, with 3,454 deaths, they rose by 1.5%. However, in Gipuzkoa, with 1,992 deaths, there was a fall of 2%. By sex, 3,305 women and 2,995 men died, which was an increase of 2.3% for women and a decrease of 0.4% for men.


Amongst the deaths that occurred in this first quarter, 5 corresponded to children under 1 year of age (0.1%) and 128 to centenarians (2%).

The main causes of death were circulatory system diseases and tumours, which caused the deaths of 1,560 and 1,529 individuals, respectively, which mean that together they accounted for 49.1% of deaths. Diseases of the respiratory system were the third cause of death resulting in 847 deaths (13.4%). Diseases of the nervous system were the fourth cause of death with 374 deaths (5.9%). Diseases of the digestive system caused 301 deaths (4.8%).


The order of importance of the causes of death varied according to sex. Among men, tumours caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst among women the main cause of death was diseases of the circulatory system, followed by tumours in second place.

Population growth was negative in all three provinces


Population growth in the Basque Country in the first quarter of 2025 was negative, with a population decrease of 3,039. The population fell in all three provinces: by 1,828 people in Bizkaia, 891 in Gipuzkoa and 320 in Álava.


In 2024 there were 171 deaths due to suicide or self-inflicted injuries in the Basque Country, that is 21.3% than in 2023 (definitive data).
