Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.5% in June 2025


Compared to the previous month, sales decreased by 0.5%


Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices once corrected for calendar effects. Compared to the previous month (May 2025), sales at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects were down 0.5%.




In year-on-year terms (June 2025 compared to June 2024), the evolution of sales was positive in both Food, with a 1.2% increase and Other Products, up 4.9%.


In month-on-month terms (June 2025 compared to May 2025), sales rose by 0.8% in the Other Products sector; however, they fell by 1.2% in the Food Sector.

During June 2025, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 3.2% in Bizkaia, 2.1% in Álava and 1.4% in Gipuzkoa.

In month-on-month terms, sales were down 0.7% in Álava, 0.5% in Gipuzkoa and 0.4% in Bizkaia.

Over the first six months of the year, sales in large stores and food chains increased by 0.8%, reaching 1.5% in Bizkaia compared to the same cumulative period of 2024. Gipuzkoa did not register any growth and in Álava there was a decrease of 0.1%.

Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 0.5% in comparison with June 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people registered a fall of 0.6%. The cumulative total for the year until June registered an increase of 1.8%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
