Overnight stays at hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 10.0% in April 2025

The total number of overnight stays during Easter 2025 was 5.9% higher than that registered the previous year

In April 2025, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 6.3% and overnight stays were up 10.0%, according to Eustat data. The 337,339 registered visitors gave rise to a total of 655,994 overnight stays. It should be borne in mind that in 2025 Easter took place in April, while in 2024 it was in March.

Foreign tourists accounted for 50.1% of visitors and 50.8% of overnight stays, following rises of 10.4% in the case of visitors and 11.9% in that of overnight stays. In turn, the number of visitors and overnight stays from the rest of Spain increased in year-on-year terms by 2.6% and 8.1%, respectively.

In Álava, there were 42,751 visitors and 90,747 overnight stays, 5.9% and 8.3% more than in April of the previous year. In Bizkaia, growth reached 11.0% in the case of visitors and 14.8% in that of overnight stays, with a total of 153,312 visitors and 291,268 overnight stays. In Gipuzkoa, 141,726 visitors were recorded in April 2025 (1.8% more than in April 2024) and there were 273,979 overnight stays (5.8% more than in the same month of the previous year).

By provincial capital, visitor numbers rose by 4.8% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 13.0% in Bilbao and 1.3% in San Sebastián. Likewise, the increase in overnight stays compared to April of the previous year reached 8.0% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 15.3% in Bilbao and 4.9% in San Sebastián.

The average length of stay in hotel establishments in the Basque Country during April 2025 was 1.94 days, higher than that obtained in the same month of 2024, which was 1.88 days.

The average length of stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers remain in each of the establishments where they stay overnight, and not the total length of their stay in the Basque Country.

The occupancy rate in April 2025 for the Basque Country as a whole was 58.9% in the case of beds and 68.4% in that of rooms. Compared to April 2024, this represented an increase of 3.1 percentage points in terms of beds and a decrease of 0.1 points in terms of rooms.

Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate (applied to a double room with a bathroom offered as room only accommodation), was 104.6 euros in April 2025 in the Basque Country, which was a rise of 2.0% in respect of April 2024. In the case of Gipuzkoa, the ADR reached 113.0 euros, in Bizkaia it was 102.2 euros and in Álava it stood at 88.0 euros. By provincial capital, the differences were greater, given that the ADR was 131.2 euros in San Sebastián, 112.1 euros in Bilbao and, lastly, 73.2 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The RevPar, or average revenue per available room, in hotel establishments in the Basque Country in April 2025 was 71.5 euros, 1.8% higher than in the same month of the previous year.

Balance for Easter 2025

The number of visitors recorded this Easter saw a slight increase of 1.1% compared to the previous year, with a total of 52,302. In April 2025 as a whole, Easter visitors accounted for 15.5% of the monthly total. In 2025, Easter was celebrated between 17 and 20 April, while the previous year it took place between 28 and 31 March.

The number of overnight stays registered at hotel establishments in the Basque Country during Easter, between Thursday and Sunday (4 nights), was higher than that recorded during Easter 2024. In fact, the 112,394 overnight stays observed during Easter 2025 represented an increase of 5.9% compared to the previous year.

Occupancy rates for the Basque Country as a whole stood at 74.6% for beds and 78.0% for rooms. These percentages represented an increase of 1.1 percentage points in the former case and a decrease of 0.4 points in the latter.

In Álava, the bed occupancy rate fell by 2.7 percentage points in relation to the previous Easter, and in Gipuzkoa it was down 1.2 points. In Bizkaia, however, the bed occupancy rate increased by 4.6 points. The room occupancy rate fell by 3.1 percentage points in Gipuzkoa, while in Bizkaia and Álava it rose by 1.6 points and 1.5 points, respectively.

Visitors from abroad accounted for 45.0% of total visitors and 43.7% of overnight stays, increasing their numbers by 15.4% and 28.6%, respectively, compared to Easter 2024. Domestic tourism registered lower values than those of the previous year, with a decrease of 8.2% in the case of visitor numbers and 6.9% in that of overnight stays.

The trends varied across the provinces. Visitor numbers decreased by 2.9% in Álava and 7.6% in Gipuzkoa, while in Bizkaia they rose by 12.2%. Likewise, overnight stays were up 12.9% in Bizkaia and 2.2% in Gipuzkoa, but down 3.3% in Álava.

As regards each of the provincial capitals, Vitoria-Gasteiz saw a decrease of 8.2% in visitor numbers and 2.9% in overnight stays. San Sebastián registered 16% fewer visitors and 2.9% fewer overnight stays than during Easter the previous year. Lastly, in Bilbao, visitor numbers rose by 15.5%, while overnight stays were up 14.5%.

Annual cumulative total

In the cumulative period of the year to date (January-April 2025), there was a 2.1% increase in visitor numbers and a 3.4% rise in overnight stays compared to the same cumulative period of the previous year. The average length of stay for this four-month period was 1.90 days in 2025, as opposed to the 1.88 days observed in the same cumulative period of the previous year.

The occupancy rate during the first four months of the year stood at 48.3% in the case of beds and 58.6% in that of rooms, 0.1 and 1.2 percentage points lower than in the same period of the previous year.
