INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INDEX. JANUARY 2025
Industrial activity in the Basque Country increased by 1.7% in January 2025
Compared to the previous month, December 2024, industrial production was down 0.3%
The industrial production of the Basque Country was up 1.7% in January 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year, in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to the previous month, industrial activity in the Basque Country decreased by 0.3% this month, once corrected for seasonal effects.
By economic destination of goods, production of Capital Goods, which include the manufacture of motor vehicles, construction of locomotives and railway material, naval construction and manufacture of aircraft, increased by 6.6% compared to the previous January.
Consumer Goods production also posted a positive year-on-year performance in January 2025, with a 2.3% rise in production for the sector as a whole. This increase was fundamentally due to the performance of Consumer Non-durables, whose production rose by 5.4%, since production of Consumer Durables was down 9.3%. Among other activities Consumer Durables includes the manufacture of furniture and domestic appliances. Consumer Non-durables includes the activities of processing and conserving foodstuffs; the manufacture of cleaning and hygiene products; pharmaceutical products; and the manufacture of clothing.
In Intermediate Goods, which includes metallurgy and manufacture of metal products, the chemical industry and manufacture of rubber and plastic products, production rose by 0.3%.
Finally, Energy production decreased by 8.7% in January 2025 in relation to the same month of the previous year. This sector includes the production and supply of electricity and oil refining.

The year-on-year evolution of the Industrial Production Index in January 2025 was positive in Gipuzkoa, with a 4.0% increase. In Bizkaia it increased by 0.5%, while in Álava, however, it fell by 0.2%.
At a more disaggregated level, among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that posted the greatest increases in production in year-on-year terms in January 2025 were: Machinery & Equipment, up 10.6%, and Electricity, Gas & Steam, which rose by 5.3%. By contrast, the year-on-year decreases in production were concentrated in Transport Material, down 3.3% and in Rubber and plastics, with a 2.5% decrease.
