CONSTRUCTION INDEX. IV/2024
Activity in the Construction sector in the Basque Country grew by 2.3% in 2024
During the year Building increased by 0.1% and Civil Engineering by 7.3%
For 2024 as a whole, activity in the construction sector in the Basque Country posted an increase at current prices of 2.3% in relation to 2023, according to Eustat data. In the case of Building, cumulative growth for the year stood at 0.1%, while in Civil Engineering the annual rate reached 7.3%. If Property Development activity is excluded, average annual growth in construction stood at 0.1%, due to the fact that Building, without taking into account property development, was down 3.1% in 2024.
The increase in activity in the construction sector during 2024 was 2.3% in Álava, 2.8% in Bizkaia and 1.5% in Gipuzkoa.
The index of people employed in the sector as a whole posted a drop of 5.0% during 2024.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, activity at current prices was 4.4% higher than that estimated in the same quarter of the previous year. Once corrected for calendar effects, the year-on-year increase at current prices in this quarter is explained by the positive performance of both the Building sub-sector, which experienced a rise of 3.9%, and the Civil Engineering sub-sector, where the increase in respect of the fourth quarter of 2023 was 5.7%.
Comparing the activity of the sector during this quarter with that of the previous quarter, the third quarter of 2024, the Construction Index increased by 2.8% in nominal terms or current prices, once corrected for seasonal effects. Activity in Building rose by 3.4% compared to the previous quarter while in Civil Engineering it was up 1.2%.

Eustat. Construction index
The construction sector increased, at current prices, by 5.6% in Álava, 4.9% in Gipuzkoa and 3.9% in Bizkaia. However, compared to the previous quarter, the Construction Index increased by 2.9% in Bizkaia and 2.8% in both Álava and Gipuzkoa.
The construction sector as a whole, without taking into account Property Development, rose by 1.0% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2023 and 1.4% compared to the third quarter of 2024.
Meanwhile, the Building sub-sector, once corrected for Property Development activity, was down 1.2% in year-on-year terms while in quarter-on-quarter terms it was up 1.4%.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, following a 0.8% decrease in respect of the previous quarter, the index of employed people was 6.3% below that observed in the same quarter of 2023.
