Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 0.1% in 2024 as a whole
In the final quarter of 2024, sales were up 1.3% on those observed in the final quarter of the previous year
In 2024 as a whole, sales in the Trade sector, which encompasses Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and Sale and Repair of Motor Vehicles, increased by 0.1% compared to 2023, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Evolution for the year as a whole was positive in both Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles, and Retail Trade, with increases of 8.8% and 2.9%, respectively. However, in the Wholesale Trade sector, sales registered a decrease of 2.9% over the course of 2024.
Sales in the Trade sector rose by 0.9% during 2024 in Gipuzkoa; in contrast, in Álava and Bizkaia sales were down 1.0% and 0.1%, respectively.
The index of people employed in the sector posted a 1.7% increase during 2024.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, sales were up 1.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. Compared to the previous quarter, and once corrected for seasonal effects, the growth in sales during the final quarter of the year was 0.8%.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales was positive in the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector and in the Retail Trade sector, with growth of 5.1% and 4.0% respectively. In contrast, in the Wholesale Trade Sector, sales were down 1.1% in respect of the fourth quarter of the previous year.
Compared to the third quarter of 2024, sales rose in three sectors: by 2.6% in Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles; by 0.8% in Wholesale Trade; and 0.6% in Retail Trade.

All three provinces had positive results in their sales during the fourth quarter of the year in respect of the same quarter of the previous year. In year-on-year terms, sales rose by 1.6% in Gipuzkoa, 1.5% in Bizkaia and 0.1% in Álava.
In relation to the previous quarter, sales increased by 1.8% in Bizkaia, whereas in Álava and Gipuzkoa they were down 0.7% and 0.1% respectively.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 0.7% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2023. However, compared to the third quarter of 2024 there was a drop of 0.3%.
