SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. November 2024

Visitor numbers and overnight stays in rural accommodation and tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by more than 30% in November 2024

In tourist hostels, visitor numbers increased by 29.4% and overnight stays rose by 25.6%

Visitor numbers in rural accommodation in the Basque Country increased by 33.3% in November 2024 in respect of the same month of the previous year, and overnight stays rose by 37.1%, according to Eustat data. With these year-on-year increases, the number of visitors reached 10,321 which resulted in 23,087 overnight stays during November.

With growth of 29.1% compared to the previous November, visitors from abroad accounted for 12.0% of the total number of visitors in Basque Country rural accommodation in November 2024. Meanwhile, in the case of overnight stays, those by visitors from abroad represented 12.9% of the total, following an increase of 48.5% in respect of November 2023.

By province, visitor numbers rose by 33.0% in Álava, 82.2% in Bizkaia and 12.3% in Gipuzkoa. As regards overnight stays, in Álava they were up 39.2% in year-on-year terms, while in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa they rose by 57.2% and 26.3%, respectively.

The average length of stay in this type of establishment in the Basque Country was 2.24 days in November 2024, above the 2.18 days average length of stay observed during the same month of the previous year. The average length of stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers remain in each of the establishments where they stay overnight, and not the total length of their stay in the Basque Country.

The bed occupancy rate rose by 4.9 percentage points in respect of that obtained in November 2023, standing at 18.6%. The room occupancy rate saw a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percentage points, standing at 23.0% in November.

In relation to tourist apartments, in November 2024 there was a total of 14,129 visitors, giving rise to 51,745 overnight stays. Comparing this data with that of the previous November, the increase reached 60.6% in the case of visitor numbers and 30.3% in that of overnight stays.

Each of the accommodation units offered under a business operating unit, managed under the block or combined mode, is referred to as a tourist apartment. Private dwellings offered, marketed or temporarily relinquished for reasons of tourism are not included under the heading of dwellings for tourism use.

Visitors from abroad accounted for 25.3% of the total number of visitors and 30.9% of the total number of overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country, after registering year-on-year increases of 62.9% and 21.2%, respectively, in November.

The average length of stay in tourist apartments was 3.66 days in November 2024, below that obtained in November 2023, which stood at 4.51 days for the Basque Country as a whole. The average length of stay in this type of establishment was 15.98 days in Álava, 5.72 days in Gipuzkoa and 2.29 days in Bizkaia.

The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 32.8% in November 2024, up 5.3 percentage points on that observed in November 2023. In contrast, the apartment occupancy rate increased by 7.2 percentage points to stand at 63.2%.

In respect of tourist hostels in the Basque Country, in November 2024 there was a year-on-year increase of 29.4% in visitor numbers, reaching a total of 12,900 visitors who generated 23,265 overnight stays. 14,254 overnight stays were registered in Bizkaia, 8,300 in Gipuzkoa and lastly, in Álava, the number of overnight stays in this type of accommodation was 710.

The average length of stay in tourist hostels in the Basque Country in November 2024 was 1.80 days. Lastly, following a year-on-year increase of 4.0 percentage points, the bed occupancy rate stood at 25.0%.
