LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. OCTOBER 2024
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.2% in October 2024
In relation to the previous month, sales were down 0.6%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 2.2% in October 2024 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and once corrected for the appropriate calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Sales in October were down 0.6% on those observed the previous month, at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects.
Sales in month-on-month terms remained stable in the Food sector; in the Other products sector, however, they fell by 1.7%. In year-on-year terms, between October 2023 and October 2024, the evolution of sales was positive in both sectors, with a rise of 2.7% in Food and 1.1% in Other Products.

By province, in October 2024, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 3.0% in Bizkaia, 1.6% in Álava and 1.0% in Gipuzkoa.
In relation to the previous month, however, there was a downturn in sales of 0.9% in Gipuzkoa, 0.5% in Bizkaia and 0.1% in Álava.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 2.1% in relation to October 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index recorded a rise of 0.7%.
In the cumulative period of the first ten months of 2024, sales in the Basque County as a whole increased by 0.3%. By province, sales were up 0.4% in Gipuzkoa and 0.3% in Bizkaia and Álava.
By sector, in Food, cumulative sales in the year to date registered a rise of 0.6%, while in Other products, sales in the year to date were down 0.3%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
