Deaths increased by 1.7% in the second quarter of 2024 in the Basque Country

COVID-19 caused 64 deaths, 26.4% less than a year ago

In the second quarter of 2024 the number of deaths in the Basque Country was 5,357, 91 deaths more than the same period of the previous year (+1.7%), according to Eustat data. In comparison with previous years, the number of deaths in this second quarter of 2024 was lower than in 2022 (5,787 deaths, -7.4%) 2021 (5,418, -1.1%), and 2020 (6,073, -11.8%); but higher than in 2019 (5,067, +5.7%) and the average for 2010-2019 (4,876, +9.9%).

Deaths increased in Álava and Bizkaia: in Álava there were 11.8% more deaths, 770 people, and in Bizkaia there was a 3.4% increase, with 2,861 deaths. In Gipuzkoa they were down 4.6%, 1,726 deaths. By sex, 2,727 women and 2,630 men died, which was an increase of 2.7% for women and 0.7% for men.

Of the deaths that occurred in this second quarter, 8 corresponded to children under 1 year of age and 101 to centenarians (0.1% and 1.9% of the total, respectively).

Tumours and circulatory diseases caused 54.2% of deaths

The main causes of death were tumours and circulatory system diseases, which caused the deaths of 1,607 and 1,295 individuals respectively, which means that together they accounted for 54.2% of deaths. Diseases of the respiratory system were the third cause of death, resulting in 392 deaths. COVID-19 caused 64 deaths (1.2% of the total).

The cause of death continued to vary according to sex. Among men, tumours caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst among women the main cause of death was diseases of the circulatory system, followed by tumours in second place.

Population growth was negative in all three provinces

Population growth in the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2024 was negative, with a population decrease of 2,160. The population fell in all three provinces: by 1,331 people in Bizkaia, 579 in Gipuzkoa and 250 in Álava.

There were 64 deaths as a result of COVID-19 in the second quarter of 2024

COVID-19 caused 64 deaths, i.e. 1.2% of all deaths. This number is 23 fewer deaths than the same quarter of 2023 (-26.4%). All these deaths were confirmed as being due to COVID-19. There were a further 7 deaths where COVID-19 was among the certified causes of death, but without being the main cause.

By province, the highest figure corresponded to Bizkaia, with 42, followed by Gipuzkoa with 14 and Álava with 8. As regards the capitals, Bilbao stands out with 14 deaths caused by COVID-19, followed by Vitoria-Gasteiz with 7 and San Sebastián with 6. Barakaldo also recorded 6 deaths due to COVID-19.

The number of deaths of women (33) resulting from this cause exceeded those of men (31), while, by age, the most affected group was those aged over 80 years old, accounting for 73.4% of deaths due to COVID-19 (47 deaths).

The majority of these deaths occurred in Basque hospitals (89.1%, 85.1% in the second quarter of 2023), followed by at home (9.4%, 3.4% in the second quarter of 2023) and residential care homes (1.6%, 11.5% in the second quarter of 2023).
