Activity in the Construction sector in the Basque Country dropped by 1.5% in the third quarter of 2024

The Building sub-sector was down 1.7% while the Civil Engineering sub-sector fell by 1.1%

At current prices, activity in the Construction sector in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2024 was 1.5% lower than that observed in the same quarter of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

Once corrected for calendar effects, the year-on-year decrease at current prices in this quarter is explained by the negative performance of both the Building sub-sector, which experienced a fall of 1.7%, and the Civil Engineering sub-sector, where the decrease in respect of the third quarter of 2023 was 1.1%.


Comparing the activity of the sector during this quarter with that of the previous quarter, the second quarter of 2024, the Construction index increased by 1.2% in nominal terms or current prices, once corrected for seasonal effects. Activity in Building rose by 3.1% compared to the previous quarter while that of Civil Engineering fell by 4.3%.

Eustat. Construction index

Activity in the construction sector fell during the third quarter of 2024 in year-on-year terms by 1.9% in Bizkaia, 1.5% in Gipuzkoa and 0.1% in Álava. In relation to the previous quarter, the construction index rose by 0.9% in Gipuzkoa, 1.2% in Bizkaia and 2.4% in Álava.

Activity in the Building sector in year-on-year terms, once corrected for Property Development activity, was 1.3% lower than in the same quarter of 2023, while in quarter-on-quarter terms it increased by 2.0%. The construction sector as a whole, without taking into account Property Development, was down 1.2% in relation to the third quarter of 2023 and was up 0.5% compared to the second quarter of 2024.

In the third quarter of 2024, following a 0.6% decrease in relation to the previous quarter, the index of employed people was 6.3% below that observed in the same quarter of 2023.
