Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 0.7% in the third quarter of 2024

The cumulative yearly total reflected a 0.4% drop in sales

In the third quarter of 2024, sales in the Trade sector, which encompasses Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles, increased by 0.7% in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous quarter, and once corrected for seasonal effects, the growth in sales in the third quarter was 0.1%.


Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales at constant prices was positive in the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector, and in the Retail Trade sector, with growth of 3.5% and 4.2% respectively. In contrast, in the Wholesale Trade Sector, sales were down 1.9% in respect of the third quarter of the previous year.

Compared to the second quarter of 2024, once corrected for seasonal effects, sales in Retail Trade increased by 1.7%. However, in Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade, sales fell in quarter-on-quarter terms by 1.9% and 0.9%, respectively.

All three provinces had positive results in their sales at constant prices in respect of the third quarter of the previous year. In year-on-year terms, sales rose by 1.2% in Gipuzkoa, 0.8% in Álava and 0.4% in Bizkaia.

In relation to the previous quarter, during the third quarter of 2024, sales increased by 1.0% in Álava and 0.4% in Gipuzkoa, while they were down 0.3% in Bizkaia.

The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 2.1% in relation to the third quarter of 2023. An increase of 0.5% was observed compared to the second quarter of 2024.

The cumulative yearly total reflects a decrease of 0.4% for the sector as a whole, caused by the drop in Wholesale Trade, which had a cumulative total for the three quarters of -3.3%. In contrast, in Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sales were up 9.5% in the year to date and in Retail Trade they rose by 2.2%.
