OTHER MARKET SERVICES INDEX. II/2024
Sales in the Market Services sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2024
Compared to the previous quarter, sales increased by 0.2%
Sales in the Other Market Services sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2024 in relation to the same quarter of the previous year, at constant prices and once calendar effects had been eliminated, according to Eustat data. This sector includes the services offered by the sectors of Transport, Hospitality, Information & Communications and Corporate Services Activities.
Compared to the previous quarter, at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales rose by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2024.
Within the Other Market Services sector, the year-on-year recovery in real sales (at constant prices) was generalised. Sales increased by 2.0% in Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities, by 1.8% in Transport & Storage and by 0.9% in Administrative and Support Service Activities. In both Hotel Management & Catering and Information & Communications, the increase in sales compared to the same quarter of the previous year was 0.7%.
Comparing this second quarter with the first quarter of the year, sales were up 3.8% in the Transport & Storage sector, and 0.2% in Hotel Management & Catering. In contrast, in quarter-on-quarter terms, sales were down by 1.6% in the Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities sector, and by 0.9% in Administrative and Support Service Activities. Lastly, in the Information & Communications sector, sales remained at the same level as the previous quarter.

By province, in Álava there was a 2.0% year-on-year increase in the sales index, in Bizkaia this was up 1.6% and in Gipuzkoa it rose by 0.6%. With respect to quarter-on-quarter evolution, growth of 0.7% was observed in Gipuzkoa and 0.6% in Álava. In Bizkaia, however, there was a 0.1% decrease compared to the previous quarter.
Lastly, the index of employed people in the Other Market Services sector in the Basque Country increased by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2024. However, compared to the first quarter of the year, the index of employed people fell by 0.3%.
NOTE
The reference year for Other Market Services has been updated, with 2021 becoming the new base year for the index. The process of changing the base year has also resulted in a substantial update to the methodology: among other aspects, the validation and allocation methods have been revised and the population under study has been modified. As a result, the series that form part of the index have also been updated.
Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the quarter-on-quarter variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
Eustat would like to thank all the establishments that have collaborated with gathering information. As a result, the index for this quarter was calculated with 98.26% coverage of the sample.
