Sales in large store and food chains in the Basque Country were up 1.0% in August 2024

In relation to the previous month, there was no significant variation in sales (0.0%)

In August 2024, sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country, at constant prices, rose by 1.0% in relation to the same month of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

However, compared to July 2024, sales at constant prices remained unchanged.

Sales increased in month-on-month terms by 0.4% in the Food sector and decreased by 0.8% in the Other Products sector. In year-on-year terms, August 2024 compared to August 2023, sales at constant prices were up 1.6% in Food and fell by 0.1% in Other Products.

In August 2024 sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms at constant prices in all three provinces: by 1.7% in Álava, 0.7% in Bizkaia and 1.1% in Gipuzkoa.

In relation to the previous month, July 2024, there was an upturn in sales of 0.8% in Gipuzkoa and decreases of 0.4% in Bizkaia and 0.2% in Álava.

Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.9% in comparison with August 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index registered a rise of 0.6%.

In the cumulative period during the first eight months of 2024, there was a cumulative decrease in sales of 0.2% in the Basque Country as a whole. There was 0.4% growth in Gipuzkoa, whereas there was a 0.5% decrease in Bizkaia and a 0.3% drop in Álava.

In Food, cumulative sales in the year to date registered a rise of 0.5% while in Other products the cumulative variation was down 1.5%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
