The value added generated by establishments in the Sundry Services sector grew by 4.6% to 4,746 million euros. The result for the financial year (938 million euros) showed growth of 4.2% in respect of 2021.

One synthetic economic indicator that measures the efficiency of company activity is apparent labour productivity, understood as the value added generated per person employed. For the Sundry Services sector as a whole, apparent labour productivity stood at 56,000 euros, slightly below the peak in 2016, and 1.4% higher than in 2021.

From a more long-term perspective, the six variables discussed recorded the highest values in the available historical series.

Starting with Turnover, the more than 10 thousand million euros obtained in 2022 was 38.9% more than the 7,200 million in 2013. Likewise, Value added at factor cost was up 26.4% compared to ten years ago, and the Result for the financial year (938 million) set a new record for the historical series, with an increase of 130.8% in respect of the figure for 2013. Although figures were more moderate, Employment and the Number of establishments followed the same positive trend, as reflected in the 19.2% rise in employment and the 13.1% increase in the number of establishments for the period 2013-2022. As regards Apparent labour productivity, with the second highest figure for the period, this increased by 6.1% over the 10 years in question.

Ancillary Transport Activities (18%) and Computing (15.2%) saw the highest growth in turnover.

The Sundry Services sector consists of a very heterogeneous group of activities. The divisions that stood out were Ancillary Transport Activities and Computing.

The former boasted turnover of 3,861 million euros, accounting for 38.5% of the sector’s total, while the latter’s turnover was 1,785 million euros, or 17.8% of the total. Together, they accounted for 56.3% of total turnover, although they only represented 35.1% of people employed and 13.4% of establishments in the Sundry Services sector.

Ancillary Transport Activities employed 11,812 people at just over a thousand establishments (1,015), while the 2,198 establishments in Computing provided a total of 17,881 jobs. Sales in these two divisions were up compared to the previous financial year, rising by 18% in Ancillary Transport Activities and 15.2% in Computing. Computing also registered growth of 8.6% in employment and 1.5% in the number of establishments, while Ancillary Transport Activities saw employment figures rise by 4.1%, but the number of establishments fall by 4.4%. It should be noted that Ancillary Transport Activities was one of the divisions that recorded the greatest decrease in the number of establishments over the last ten years, with a drop of 9.4%. However, this had no negative effect on employment, in fact, quite the opposite, as it saw a significant increase of 15.1%. In contrast, establishment and employment numbers for Computing activities exceeded the initial 2013 figures by 26.2% and 36.2%.

In third place with regard to turnover was the Cultural Activities division, which turned over 1,071 million euros, 4.8% more than the previous financial year. Cultural Activities provided employment for 7,761 people across 2,944 establishments; in comparison to the previous year, employment grew by 1.9% and the number of establishments by 6.1%. This division saw a very sharp rise in activity, given that in only ten years it went from having just over 2,000 establishments to nearly 3,000, an increase of 38.9%. Likewise, employment has shot up by 27.2% since 2013 and turnover by 69.3%, with steady growth year after year, except in 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, for obvious reasons.

The next division in terms of turnover was Sport and Recreational Activities, with 849 million, employing 11,236 people at 1,915 establishments. In the last financial year, it saw turnover rise by 4.1%, employment by 8.4% and the number of establishments by 6.3%. The evolution of Sport and Recreational Activities over the last decade has been just as positive as that of Cultural Activities: the number of establishments, employment and turnover all recorded similar increases of 45.1%, 45.7% and 49.9%, respectively.

Following closely behind in terms of turnover was Property Activities, with 688 million euros; however, this division only employed around half the number of people (5,017), albeit at a larger number of establishments (2,916). During the last year, it saw turnover drop by 2.5%, employment fall by 3.7%, and the number of establishments decrease by 4.1%. From a longer-term perspective, only the number of establishments recorded a negative trend, particularly in recent years, with 1.4% of establishments disappearing compared to 2013. However, this moderate decrease has not prevented employment, with 9.8% more people in work, or, in particular, turnover, which was up an unquestionable 24.4%, from continuing their unequivocally positive trend.

Other Personal Services includes diverse activities such as Hairdressing and Other Beauty Treatments, Washing and Cleaning of Clothing, and Physical Maintenance Activities, among others. As a whole, these activities experienced an increase in turnover (7.7%), reaching a total of 491 million euros, as well as a rise in employment (1.3%) and the number of establishments (1.1%). The results for 2022 are a consequence of the sustained trajectory of year-on-year increases in the number of people employed (9.3%), the number of establishments (16.0%) and turnover (12.1%) between 2013 and 2022.

The Auxiliary Financial Services division performed differently, with a positive performance regarding turnover (up 6.8%), but a negative performance in terms of employment (-1.3%) and the number of establishments (-3.1%). In the long term, only turnover followed an upward trend, with an increase of 30.9%, while the number of establishments fell by 9.6% and employment barely managed to remain stable (0.7%).
