LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. MAY 2024
The sales index of large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 0.6% in May 2024
In relation to the previous month, sales were up 0.2%
According to Eustat data, sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.6% at constant prices in May 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year.
In relation to April 2024, sales at constant prices increased by 0.2%.
In the Food sector, sales at constant prices were up 0.5% in month-on-month terms. However, a 0.4% decrease in sales was recorded for the Other products sector.
In year-on-year terms, May 2024 compared to May 2023, sales at constant prices fell by 1.3% in Food, whereas they rose by 0.7% in Other Products.

In May 2024 sales in large stores and food chains decreased in year-on-year terms by 1.7% in Bizkaia and 0.3% in Álava. However, in Gipuzkoa, sales at constant prices rose by 1.1%.
In comparison with the previous month (i.e. April 2024), sales fell in both Bizkaia and Álava, by 0.2% and 0.3% respectively. In contrast, Gipuzkoa recorded a 1.1% increase in sales at constant prices over the equivalent figure for the previous month.
Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country decreased by 0.5% in comparison with May 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index was down 0.8%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
