LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. JUNE 2024
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 1.3% in June 2024
The cumulative total of the first six months of the year registered a 0.2% drop in sales
In June 2024, sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country, at constant prices, were down 1.3% in relation to the same month of the previous year, according to Eustat data.
However, compared to May 2024, sales at constant prices remained unchanged.
In the Food sector, sales at constant prices were up 0.7% in month-on-month terms. In contrast, sales in the Other products sector were down 1.4%.
In year-on-year terms, June 2024 compared to June 2023, there was a downturn in sales at constant prices of 0.3% in the Food sector and of 3.2% in the Other products sector.

In June 2024 sales in large stores and food chains decreased in year-on-year terms at constant prices in all three provinces: by 0.6% in Bizkaia, 1.3% in Gipuzkoa and 3.8% in Álava.
In relation to the previous month (May 2024) sales in Bizkaia were up 0.8%. However, in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, sales were down by 1.2% and 0.8%, respectively.
Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.7% in comparison with June 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index was up 1.3%.
The cumulative total for the first six months of the year registered a 0.2% drop in sales, a decrease that extended to two of the three provinces: sales were down 0.1% in Álava and 0.7% in Bizkaia. In Gipuzkoa, however, the first six months of the year saw a cumulative rise in sales in of half a point. In Food, cumulative total sales registered a rise of 0.3% while in Other products the cumulative variation was negative, down 1.3%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
