Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country decreased by 2.9% in January 2024

Compared to the previous month, December 2024, sales increased by 0.1%

Sales in large store and food chains in the Basque Country registered a decrease of 2.9% in January 2024 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

In relation to December 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices increased by 0.1% during January.

In the Food sector, sales at constant prices were up 0.2% in month-on-month terms. However, in the Other products sector, sales were down 0.2% in relation to the previous month.

In year-on-year terms (January 2024 compared to January 2023), the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in both Food, with a 1.5% decrease, and Other Products, down 5.1%.

In January 2024, sales in large stores and food chains experienced a downturn in year-on-year terms in all three provinces. Thus, the decrease in sales, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, was 3.4% in Bizkaia, 2.5% in Álava and 2.1% in Gipuzkoa.

Compared to December 2023, i.e. in month-on-month terms, sales were up 0.5% in Gipuzkoa, remained stable in Bizkaia and were down 0.6% in Álava.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 1.7% in relation to January 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people was up 0.1%.

NOTE

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
