SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. November 2023
In November 2023, overnight stays in rural accommodation in the Basque Country were down 9.1% while they increased by 4.9% in tourist apartments
The average length of stay stood at 2.18 days in rural accommodation and 4.51 days in tourist apartments
The number of visitors in rural accommodation in the Basque country in November 2023 stood at 7,742 and there were 16,843 overnight stays, according to Eustat data. In relation to the same month of the previous year the evolution was negative, with a year-on-year decrease of 8.9% in visitor numbers and 9.1% in overnight stays.

Following a decrease of 1.8% in relation to November of the previous year, visitors from abroad accounted for 12.3% of the total number of visitors in Basque Country rural accommodation in November 2023. Meanwhile, in the case of overnight stays, those by visitors from abroad represented 11.9% of the total, following a decrease of 19.5% in respect of November 2022.
By province, visitor numbers rose by 1.6% in Álava and 3.2% in Gipuzkoa, while they fell by 34.1% in Bizkaia. As regards overnight stays, in year-on-year terms, they rose 14.3% in Álava, while they fell by 7.8% in Gipuzkoa and 24.9% in Bizkaia.
The average length of stay in this type of establishment in the Basque Country was 2.18 days in November 2023, identical to that observed in the same month of the previous year. The average length of stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers remain in each of the establishments where they stay overnight, and not the total length of their stay in the Basque Country.
The bed occupancy rate fell by 0.8 percentage points in respect of that estimated for November 2022, standing at 13.7%. The room occupancy rate stood at 17.5%, which was a year-on-year decrease of 0.7 points.
In relation to tourist apartments, in November 2023 there was a total of 8,799 visitors, giving rise to 39,713 overnight stays. Comparing this data with that from November of the previous year reveals a drop of 1.7% in visitor numbers and an increase of 4.9% in overnight stays.
Each of the accommodation units offered under a business operating unit, managed under the block or combined mode, is referred to as a tourist apartment. Private dwellings offered, marketed or temporarily relinquished for reasons of tourism are not included under the heading of dwellings for tourism use.

People from abroad accounted for 24.9% of the total number of visitors and 33.3% of the total number of overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country, after registering year-on-year increases in November 2023 of 2.6% and 13.3%, respectively.
The average length of stay in tourist apartments was 4.51 days in November 2023, higher than the 4.23 days of November 2022, in the Basque Country as a whole. The average length of stay in this type of establishment was 12.51 days in Álava, 6.97 days in Gipuzkoa and 2.50 days in Bizkaia.
The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 27.5% in November 2023, 0.6 percentage points lower than that observed in November 2022. Meanwhile, the apartment occupancy rate increased by 0.8 percentage points to stand at 56.0% in November 2023.
In respect of tourist hostels in the Basque Country, in November 2023 there was a year-on-year decrease in visitor numbers of 18.0%, reaching a total of 9,966 visitors who generated 18,524 overnight stays. 12,406 overnight stays were registered in Bizkaia, 5,392 in Gipuzkoa and lastly, in Álava, the number of overnight stays in this type of accommodation was 726.
In November 2023, the average length of stay in tourist hostels was 1.86 days in the Basque Country as a whole and the bed occupancy rate, after a year-on-year decrease of 3.1 percentage points, was 21.0%.
