LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. NOVEMBER 2023
The sales index of large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 0.3% in November 2023
The balance of the first eleven months of 2023 closed with 0.2% growth
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.3% in November 2023, in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous month (October 2023), and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices decreased by 0.1% in November 2023.
Sales in month-on-month terms fell by 0.8% in the Food sector, while sales rose by 1.2% in Other Products.
In year-on-year terms, November 2023 compared to November 2022, there was a 1.3% decrease in sales at constant prices in Food and a 1.6% increase in Other Products.

Sales in large stores and food chains were up by 0.3% in Álava in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar. However, in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, they decreased by 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively.
Compared to the previous month, sales in Álava were also up 0.3% In Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, however, there were month-on-month decreases of 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 2.7% in relation to November 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people rose by 1.1%.
BALANCE FOR THE CULMULATIVE PERIOD OF THE FIRST ELEVEN MONTHS OF 2023
During the first eleven months of 2023, sales at large stores and food chains registered cumulative growth of 0.2%. There was a 0.3% increase in the Food sector, and a 0.1% rise in Other products.
The cumulative variation to November was positive in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, with increases of 0.6% in both cases. In Álava, however, sales were down 1.8% on the same cumulative period of the previous year.
Finally, the index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 3.2% in the first eleven months of the year.
NOTE
Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
