Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country were down 2.7% in the third quarter of 2023
Compared to the previous quarter, the decrease was 0.7%
In the third quarter of 2023, sales in the Trade sector, which encompasses Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles, were down 2.7% in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous quarter and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales fell by 0.7% in the third quarter of 2023.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales was positive in the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector, with growth of 6.3%, and in the Retail Trade sector, where sales were 0.7% higher than in the third quarter of the previous year. In the Wholesale Trade sector, however, sales fell by 6.6% in year-on-year terms.
In relation to the previous quarter, once corrected for seasonal effects, there was a downturn in both Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade, with quarter-on-quarter decreases of 1.3% and 0.1%, respectively. In contrast, sales in the Sales and repair of motor vehicles sub-sector rose by 1.7% in relation to the previous quarter.

Sales in the Trade sector experienced a year-on-year decrease at constant prices in all three provinces. There were decreases of 3.6% in Gipuzkoa, 2.6% in Álava and, lastly, 2.1% in Bizkaia.
In relation to the second quarter of 2023, sales decreased by 1.8% in Gipuzkoa and by 0.2% in Bizkaia. However, in Álava, sales increased by 0.1% compared to the previous quarter.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.3% in the third quarter of 2023 in relation to the third quarter of 2022. With respect to the second quarter of the year, growth stood at 0.4%.
