LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. OCTOBER 2023
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 0.6% in October 2023
Food sales were down 3.6%, but sales of Other products were up 1.0%
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.6% in October 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous month, September 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices decreased by 2.0% in October 2023.
Sales in month-on-month terms fell by 3.6% in the Food sector, while sales rose by 1.0% in Other Products.
In year-on-year terms, October 2023 compared to September 2022, there was an 0.7% decrease in sales at constant prices in Food and a 0.5% decrease in Other Products.

Sales in large stores and food chains decreased in year-on-year terms in all three provinces. There were decreases of 0.8% in Bizkaia, 0.5% in Gipuzkoa and, lastly, 0.2% in Álava.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 1.2% in relation to October 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people remained unchanged.
BALANCE FOR THE CULMULATIVE PERIOD OF THE FIRST TEN MONTHS OF 2023
During the first ten months of 2023, sales at large stores and food chains registered cumulative growth of 0.3%. In the case of the Food sector, the increase reached 0.5%, while in Other Products cumulative sales remained stable (0.0%).
The cumulative variation to October was positive in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, with increases of 0.7% in both cases. In Álava, however, sales were 2.0% lower than the same cumulative period of the previous year.
Finally, the index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 3.3% in the first ten months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
