LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. SEPTEMBER 2023
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.4% in September 2023
In relation to the previous month, sales were up 0.6%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 2.4% in September 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to the previous month, August 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices rose by 0.6% in September 2023.
Sales in month-on-month terms increased by 1.4% in the Food sector, while sales were down 0.9% in Other Products.
In year-on-year terms, September 2023 compared to September 2022, there was an increase in sales at constant prices of 6.0% in Food and a decrease of 3.9% in Other Products.

Sales in large stores and food chains were up in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, in all three provinces of the Basque Country. Sales rose by 5.8% in Gipuzkoa, 1.2% in Álava and, lastly, 0.9% in Bizkaia.
In relation to the previous month, sales increased by 2.0% and 1.5% in Álava and Gipuzkoa, respectively. In Bizkaia, however, there was a month-on-month decrease of 0.2%.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 1.5% in relation to September 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people fell by 0.2%.
BALANCE FOR THE CULMULATIVE PERIOD OF THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF 2023
During the first nine months of 2023, sales at large stores and food chains registered cumulative growth of 0.4%. In the case of the Food sector, the increase reached 0.6%, while in Other Products cumulative sales remained stable (0.0%).
The cumulative variation until September was positive in Bizkaia and in Gipuzkoa, with increases of 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively. In Álava, however, sales were 2.2% down on the same cumulative period of the previous year.
The index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 3.5% in the first nine months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
