Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 1.7% in August 2023

Compared to the previous month, July 2023, sales rose by 2.4%

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 1.7% in August 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous month, July 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices rose by 2.4% in August 2023.

Sales in month-on-month terms obtained positive results in the two sectors: 2.2% in Food and 2.6% in Other Products.

In year-on-year terms, August 2023 compared to August 2022, there was 2.8% increase in sales at constant prices in Food , but sales fell by 0.1% in Other Products.

Sales in large stores and food chains were up in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, in the provinces of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, by 3.3% and 1.4% respectively. However, they were down 3.6% in Álava.

In relation to the previous month, July 2023, there was also an upturn in sales in Gipuzkoa (2.9%) and Bizkaia (2.8%). By contrast, in Álava, there was a downturn of 0.4%.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 3.4% in relation to August 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people rose, albeit to a lesser extent, by 0.9%.

BALANCE OF THE CUMULATIVE PERIOD UNTIL AUGUST 2023

During the first eight months of 2023, sales at large stores and food chains registered growth of 0.2%. In the case of Other Products, this reached 0.7%, but a 0.1% drop was recorded in Food sales.

The cumulative variation until August was positive in Bizkaia (0.9%) and Gipuzkoa (0.2%), while in Álava it was negative (2.6%).

The index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 3.8% in the first eight months of the year.

NOTE

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
