Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 1.0% in July 2023

Compared to the previous month, June 2023, sales fell by 2.3%

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 1.0% in July 2023, in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous month, June 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices fell by 2.3% in July.

Sales in month-on-month terms were down in the two sectors: by 2.0% in Food and by 2.7% in Other Products.

In year-on-year terms, July 2023 compared to July 2022, there was 1.0% drop in sales at constant prices in both Food and Other Products.

Sales in large stores and food chains were down in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, in all three provinces: by 2.0% in Gipuzkoa, 0.7% in Álava and 0.4% in Bizkaia.

In relation to the previous month, June 2023, there was also a drop in sales in all three provinces: of 3.7% in Gipuzkoa, 1.8% in Álava and 1.6% in Bizkaia.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 2.2% in relation to July 2022. However, compared to the previous month, the index of employed people fell by 0.2%.

BALANCE OF THE CUMULATIVE PERIOD UNTIL JULY 2023

During the first seven months of 2023, sales in large stores and food chains remained stable in respect of the same cumulative period of the previous year. By sectors, sales in Other Products increased by 0.8%, whereas Food sales were down 0.5%.

The cumulative variation for the year to date was positive in the case of Bizkaia, up 0.6%, whereas in Álava it was negative, down 2.5%. Finally, in Gipuzkoa, sales remained constant (0.0%).

The index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 3.8% in the first seven months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
