SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. June 2023
Visitor numbers rose by 16.5% in rural accommodation and 15.7% in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in June 2023
Tourist hostels also saw an increase in visitor numbers of 1.5% in respect of the same month of the previous year
In rural accommodation in the Basque Country in June 2023, visitor numbers rose by 16.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, and overnight stays increased by 1.7%, according to EUSTAT data. With this year-on-year growth, in June 2023 the number of visitors reached 18,796 and the number of overnight stays stood at 38,932.

After rising by 94.4% in relation to June of the previous year, visitors from abroad accounted for 35.2% of the total number of visitors in June 2023 in rural accommodation in the Basque Country. As regards overnight stays, those by visitors from abroad represented 33.9% of the total, with an increase of 43.6% compared to June 2022.
By province, the year-on-year increases in visitor numbers in June 2023 reached 18.4% in Bizkaia, 17.0% in Gipuzkoa and 11.6% in Álava. Overnight stays increased by 23.0% in Bizkaia, while they decreased by 4.0% in Álava and 7.3% in Gipuzkoa.
The average length of stay in this type of establishment in the Basque Country was 2.07 days during the month of June, below the 2.37 days of average length of stay observed in the same month of 2022. The average length of stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers remain in each of the establishments where they stay overnight, and not the total length of their stay in the Basque Country.
Bed and room occupancy rates experienced a year-on-year increase of 0.7 percentage points, the bed occupancy rate standing at 28.5% and that of rooms at 33.4%.
In relation to tourist apartments, in June 2023 there was a total of 16,776 visitors, giving rise to 53,485 overnight stays. Compared to June of the previous year, there was a 15.7% increase in the case of visitor numbers and 8.3% in that of overnight stays.
Each of the accommodation units offered under a business operating unit, managed under the block or combined mode, is referred to as a tourist apartment. Private dwellings offered, marketed or temporarily relinquished for reasons of tourism are not included under the heading of dwellings for tourism use.

Visitors from abroad accounted for 41.1% of the total number of visitors and 41.6% of the total number of overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country, after registering year-on-year increases of 24.4% and 13.8%, respectively, during June 2023.
The average length of stay in tourist apartments was 3.19 days in June 2023, below that obtained in June 2022, which stood at 3.41 days for the Basque Country as a whole. The average length of stay in this type of establishment was 4.46 days in Gipuzkoa, 4.97 days in Álava and 2.29 days in Bizkaia.
The bed occupancy rate at the Basque Country level reached 38.5%, practically identical to that of June 2022 (38.4%). In contrast, the apartment occupancy rate dropped by 3.1 percentage points to stand at 62.8%.
In respect of tourist hostels in the Basque Country, in June 2023 there was a year-on-year increase of 1.5% in visitor numbers, reaching a total of 24,648 visitors who generated a total of 43,467 overnight stays. 22,177 overnight stays were registered in Bizkaia, 20,142 in Gipuzkoa and lastly, the number of overnight stays in Álava was 1,149.
In June 2023, the average length of stay in this type of accommodation was 1.76 days in the Basque Country as a whole and the bed occupancy rate, after a year-on-year decrease of 2.4 percentage points, reached 42.9%.
