LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. JUNE 2023
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 1.6% in June 2023
The cumulative total for sales in the first six months recorded an increase of 0.2%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 1.6% in June 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous month (May 2023) and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices rose by 0.4% in June 2023.
Sales in month-on-month terms increased in both sectors: by 0.2% in Food and by 0.6% in Other Products.
In year-on-year terms, June 2023 compared to June 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was positive in the Food sector, with an increase of 2.5%. However, in Other Products the results were negative, with a 0.2% decrease in sales compared to June of the previous year.

Sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms in all three provinces: By 4.5% in Gipuzkoa, 0.6% in Álava and 0.2% in Bizkaia, all at constant prices and in homogenous terms of the working calendar.
In relation to the previous month (May 2023), an increase in sales was observed in the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Álava of 1.5% and 1.2% respectively, while in Bizkaia there was a 0.4% decrease in quarter-on-quarter terms.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 3.2% in relation to June 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people rose by 0.3%.
BALANCE OF THE CUMULATIVE TOTAL TO JUNE 2023
In the first six months of 2023, the cumulative increase in the Sales index for large stores and food chains was 0.2% compared to the first six months of the year. Regarding sectorisation, in the same period an increase in sales for Other Products (1.1%) and a decrease for Food (0.4%) were observed.
The cumulative variation in the year-to-date was positive in the provinces of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, up 0.8% and 0.4%, respectively. In Álava, however, it was down 2.8%.
The index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 4.2% in the first six months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
