SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Hotels. June 2023

In hotel establishments in the Basque Country in June 2023 visitor numbers increased by 8.3% and overnight stays rose by 6.5%

Visitors from abroad, with an increase of 20.1%, exceeded those from within Spain and accounted for 52.9% of the total

In June 2023, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 8.3% and overnight stays were up 6.5% in year-on-year terms, according to Eustat data. The 334,897 registered visitors gave rise to a total of 652,205 overnight stays.

Foreign tourists accounted for 52.9% of visitor numbers and 54.3% of overnight stays, following rises of 20.1% in the case of visitor numbers and 14.5% in that of overnight stays, thus exceeding those from within Spain.

In Álava, there were 44,048 visitors and 84,836 overnight stays, 12.5% and 13.7% more than in June of the previous year. In Bizkaia, growth reached 6.7% in the case of visitors and 4.1% in that of overnight stays, with a total of 151,169 visitors and 285,257 overnight stays. In Gipuzkoa, 139,680 visitors were recorded in June 2023 (8.9% more than in June 2022) and there were 282,112 overnight stays (6.9% more than in the same month of the previous year).

By provincial capital, visitor numbers rose by 15.7% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 5.0% in Bilbao and 12.8% in San Sebastián. Likewise, the increase in overnight stays compared to June of the previous year reached 20.0% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 4.9% in Bilbao and 6.7% in San Sebastián.

The average length of stay in hotel establishments in the Basque Country during June 2023 was 1.95 days, slightly below the 1.98 days observed in the same month of 2022.

The average stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers stay in each of the establishments where they spend the night and not to the total duration of their stay in the Basque Country.

The occupancy rate for the Basque Country as a whole in June stood at 61.9% in the case of beds and 75.0% in that of rooms. In relation to June 2022, the increases stood at 1.3 and 2.2 percentage points, respectively.

The average daily rate or ADR (applied to a double room with a bathroom offered as room only accommodation), was 121.75 euros in June 2023 in the Basque Country, which was a rise of 14.7% in respect of June 2022. The ADR stood at 140.58 euros in Gipuzkoa, 113.81 euros in Bizkaia and 89.72 euros in Álava. By provincial capital, the differences were greater, given that the ADR reached 177.25 euros in San Sebastián, 129.85 euros in Bilbao and, lastly, 72.48 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The RevPar, or average revenue per available room, was 91.35 euros in hotel establishments in the Basque Country in June 2023, 18.2% higher than that obtained in the same month of the previous year.

Azkena Rock Festival

The latest ARF (Azkena Rock Festival) held in Vitoria-Gasteiz from 15-17 June 2023, generated increases in both visitor numbers, up 2.5%, and overnight night stays, up 3.0%, in hotel establishments in Álava as a whole. In the capital, the event venue, the increases registered on those days, in respect of the same days of the ARF in 2022, reached 5.3% in the case of visitor numbers and 8.7% in that of overnight stays. Occupancy rates for both beds and rooms, although slightly lower than those for the 2022 event, reached values of 71.9% and 84.2%, respectively.
