Overnight stays in hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 12.3% in May 2023

Visitors from abroad, with an increase of 25.0%, exceeded those from within Spain and accounted for 53.4% of the total

In May 2023, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 10.0% and overnight stays were up 12.3% in year-on-year terms, according to Eustat data. The 332,134 registered visitors gave rise to a total of 631,965 overnight stays.

Foreign tourists accounted for 53.4% of visitor numbers and 54.6% of overnight stays, following rises of 25.0% in the case of visitor numbers and 25.3% in that of overnight stays, thus exceeding those from within Spain.

In Álava, there were 42,030 visitors and 79,195 overnight stays, 9.9% and 13.4% more than in May of the previous year. In Bizkaia, growth reached 8.9% in the case of visitors and 10.3% in that of overnight stays, with a total of 150,229 visitors and 282,841 overnight stays. In Gipuzkoa, 139,875 visitors were recorded in May 2023 (11.2% more than in May 2022) and there were 269,929 overnight stays (14.2% more than in the same month of the previous year).

By provincial capital, visitor numbers rose by 16.0% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 9.3% in Bilbao and 13.6% in San Sebastián. Likewise, the increase in overnight stays compared to May of the previous year reached 18.1% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 10% in Bilbao and 14.5% in San Sebastián.

The average length of stay in hotel establishments in the Basque Country during May 2023 was 1.90 days, slightly higher than the 1.86 days observed in the same month of 2022.

The average length of stay refers to the number of days that, on average, travellers remain in each of the establishments where they stay overnight, and not the total length of their stay in the Basque Country.

The occupancy rate for the Basque Country as a whole in May was 58.6% in the case of beds and 71.5% in that of rooms. In relation to May 2022, the increases were 4.2 and 5.5 percentage points respectively.

Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate (applied to a double room with a bathroom offered as room only accommodation), was 110.75 euros in May 2023 in the Basque Country, which was a rise of 13.6% in respect of May 2022. The ADR stood at 121.40 euros in Gipuzkoa, 107.62 euros in Bizkaia and 88.11 euros in Álava. By provincial capital, the differences were greater, given that the ADR reached 148.68 euros in San Sebastián, 122.25 euros in Bilbao and, lastly, 70.53 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The RevPar, or average revenue per available room, was 79.15 euros in hotel establishments in the Basque Country in May 2023, 23.2% higher than that obtained in the same month of the previous year.
