LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. FEBRUARY 2023
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 0.6% in February 2023
Compared to the previous month, January 2023, sales fell by 1.0%
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.6% in February 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to the previous month (January 2023) and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices decreased by 1.0% in February.
In month-on-month terms, sales fell in both the Food and Other products sectors, by 0.5% and 1.8% respectively.
In year-on-year terms, February 2023 compared to February 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was also negative in both sectors, with a 0.4% decrease in Food and 1.0% in Other products.

In February 2023, sales at large stores and food chains in Bizkaia increased by 0.5% in year-on-year terms. In contrast, in the case of Álava and Gipuzkoa, they fell by 6.1% and 0.1% respectively, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.
Compared to January 2023, i.e. in month-on-month terms, sales increased by 0.3% in Gipuzkoa, while in Álava and Bizkaia they decreased by 2.2% and 1.4% respectively.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 4.0% in relation to February 2022. Finally, in month-on-month terms, the index of people employed rose by 0.1%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
