Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 3.0% in 2022 as a whole
In the fourth quarter of 2022, sales were up 2.1% compared to the same quarter of 2021
In 2022 as a whole, sales in the Trade sector increased by 3.0% at constant prices in relation to 2021, according to Eustat data. Evolution for the year as a whole was positive both in Wholesale trade with a 4.8% increase in sales and in Retail Trade, where annual growth of 2.9% was posted. However, in the Sale and Repair of Motor Vehicles sector, cumulative sales over the course of 2022 were 7.4% lower than those seen in 2021.
Sales in the Trade sector increased throughout 2022 in all three provinces. Growth compared to 2021 reached 4.6% in Bizkaia, 1.7% in Álava, and finally, 1.2% in Gipuzkoa.
Looking at the data from the fourth quarter of 2022 alone, sales in the Trade sector increased by 2.1% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2021 once corrected for the corresponding calendar effects and at constant prices. Compared to the previous quarter and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales were up 1.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales was positive in both the Wholesale Trade sector, with growth of 4.6%, and the Retail Trade sector, where sales were 2.8% higher than the last quarter of the previous year. In contrast, in the Sale and Repair of Vehicles sector , sales were 3.8% lower than those seen in the fourth quarter of 2021, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects.
Compared to the previous quarter, sales were up both in Wholesale Trade and Sale and Repair of Motor Vehicles, once corrected for seasonal effects, with quarter-on-quarter growth of 0.7% and 0.5% respectively. In the Retail Trade sub-sector, however, sales fell by 0.1% compared to the previous quarter.

By province, in the Trade sector as a whole, sales increased in year-on-year terms at constant prices by 4.3% and 0.7% in Bizkaia and Álava respectively. In contrast, sales in Gipuzkoa decreased by 0.6%.
Compared to the third quarter of 2022, sales were up in all three provinces. In effect, the quarter-on-quarter increase was 1.8% in Bizkaia, 1.3% in Álava and lastly, 0.1% in Gipuzkoa.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.3% in the fourth quarter of 2022 in relation to the fourth quarter of 2021. With respect to the third quarter of the year, growth stood at 0.2%.
