SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Except hotels. October 2022.
In October 2022, visitor numbers and overnight stays in rural accommodation in the Basque Country fell by 4.5% and 12.7%, respectively
However foreign visitor numbers and overnight stays rose in October 2022 by 94.9% and 86.2%
Visitor numbers and overnight stays at rural accommodation in the Basque Country in October 2022 rose to 14,976 and 33,876, respectively, which meant a year-on-year decrease of 4.5% in visitors and 12.7% in overnight stays, according to Eustat data. As regards origin, visitors and overnight stays from the rest of Spain decreased by 18.3% and 23.3%, respectively, while those from abroad increased by 94.9% in the case of visitors and 86.2% in that of overnight stays.

Still lower than those observed in October of the previous year, 75.2% of visitors registered at rural accommodation in the Basque Country in October 2022 were from the rest of Spain. Regarding visitors from abroad, the 3,718 visitors observed in October 2022 represented 24.8% of total visitor numbers, while the 1,908 visitors observed in October 2021 represented 12.2% of the total.
The year-on-year variations in the number of visitors in October 2022 varied by province. In effect, while visitor numbers fell by 6.1% in Gipuzkoa and 27.5% in Álava, they were, however, up 16.2% in Bizkaia. Likewise, in the case of overnight stays, the decrease stood at 16.6% in Gipuzkoa and 33.3% in Álava, while in Bizkaia the variation was positive, with growth of 11.0%.
The average length of stay at this type of establishment was 2.26 days in October 2022, slightly lower than the 2.47 days observed in the same month of 2021.
Bed and room occupancy rates showed a year-on-year decrease of 4.1 and 4.2 percentage points respectively, the bed occupancy rate standing at 24.3% and that of rooms at 28.4%.
In tourist apartments, the number of visitors from abroad increased by 61.3% and overnight stays by 36.8%
As regards tourist apartments, during October 2022, visitor numbers and overnight stays totalled 13,648 and 52,312, respectively. In relation to October of the previous year, the year-on-year increase in visitor numbers stood at 36.3% and that of overnight stays at 24.9%. These increases were produced both in the number of people from the rest of Spain, which grew by 28.0% in the case of visitors and 20.0% in that of overnight stays, and in those from abroad, which increased by 61.3% and 36.8% respectively.

At the provincial level, growth in both visitor numbers and overnight stays was led by Bizkaia, with increases of 45.2% and 47.4% respectively. In Gipuzkoa, the increases were 19.1% in the case of visitors and 16.0% in that of overnight stays. Lastly, in Álava, a 26.7% increase in visitors was registered, while for overnight stays the increase was 4.3%.
The average length of stay at this type of establishment was 3.83 days in October 2022, below the 4.18 days obtained in October 2021.

The response rate for the Survey on Tourist Establishments in October 2022 was 94.5% for Rural Accommodation and 85.0% for Tourist Apartments.
