Source/destination countries, October 2022

In October 2022, five countries (Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Belgium) were the Basque Country’s biggest customers, absorbing 49.5% (1,402 million) of the total exported. Three of these belong to the EU27, which accounts for 64.4%.

Exports to Germany increased by 36.7%, to France by 13.8%, to the United Kingdom by 18.5%, to the United States by 6.5% and to Belgium by 38.0%. There was also a rise in exports to Italy (32.2%), Portugal (28.3%) and the Netherlands (47.4%). Outside Europe, exports to Morocco (182.5%), Mexico (36.1%), Brazil (51.3%), China (9.5%) and Singapore (955.3%) increased, while those to Russia decreased significantly (-81.1%).

42.7% of Basque imports came from the EU27. The standout European countries in terms of imports were Poland, with a year-on-year increase of 46.1% and the Netherlands, with 45.9%. There was also a rise in imports from Germany (1.5%), France (6.2%), Italy (9.1%) and Portugal (10.6%). In the case of the United Kingdom, there was a drop of 35.9%.

Looking at the rest of the world, we can see that there were also increases in imports from the United States (125.1% with 188 million in imports), Brazil (112.4% with 189 million), China (72.8% and 213 million) and Iraq (114 million). In contrast, there was a decline in imports from Mexico (-62.6% and 47 million) and Nigeria (-97.5% and 1 million). In the case of Russia, there was a drop of 51.1%, going from 98.4 million in October 2021 to 48.1 million in the same month of 2022. 47 million of these imports were “energy” related, specifically “Refined petroleum oils”.

Basque energy imports were distributed as follows: 363 million from America (48.8%), with 104 million coming from the United States and 177 from Brazil, 209 million from Asia (28.2%), of which 114 million correspond to Iraq, 111 million from Africa (15.0%) and 60 million from Europe (8.0%).

Products traded, October 2022

A more detailed look reveals that in October 2022 the ten main customs duty groups accounted for 43.3% of exports, with a combined value of 1,225.5 million euros.

Within this group, it is worth noting the sharp rise in “Goods not specifically covered by the customs tariff”: 182.8% and 35 million more than the same month of the previous year, for a total this month of 54 million, of which 42 went to Belgium. The cumulative total of exports for this customs duty group up to October 2022, 408.6 million, exceeded joint exports from the previous two years (367.7 million).

If we widen the scope to include the 25 most notable customs duty groups, it is worth highlighting “Unfilleted frozen fish” (243.4%), which went from 9 to 30 million in exports. Other products that registered a sharp rise were “Biodiesel and mixtures thereof”, going from 0 to 31 million, “Diesel and electric motor units for railway tracks and motorised trams”, from 0 to 51 million and “Seamless tubes and hollow profiles made of iron or steel” (117.6% with 63 million in exports).

There was also considerable growth in groups such as: “Bars and profiles of other steel alloys and hollow bars for drilling” (72.4% and 35.6 million in exports), “Refined petroleum oils” (101.1% and 216.4 million, which meant 108.8 million more than in the same month of the previous year), “Passenger cars with fewer than 10 seats” (62.1% with 300.3 million in exports) and “Vehicle parts and accessories” (31.4% and 185.9 million in exports).

Special mention should be made of the sharp rise in exports of “Soya-bean oil”, which reached 21.3 million and may be related to the 23.9 million in imports this month of the same product.

“Refined petroleum oils” was the group with the highest volume of exports from the Basque Country, with 2,177.3 million in exports and a growth rate of 130.7%.

Among the products with the highest growth were “Diesel and electric motor units for railway tracks and motorised trams”, with 990.7% and 374.9 million exported, and “Seamless tubes and hollow profiles made of iron or steel” (117.2% and 538.7 million). For the other products in the top ten ranking, noteworthy growth ranged from 21.9% (2,147 million in exports) for “Passenger cars with fewer than 10 seats” to 124.8% (408.6 million) for “Goods not specifically covered by the customs tariff”.

Other significant increases include those recorded in “Iron or non-alloy steel sections”, “Goods Transport Vehicles”, “Vehicle parts and accessories” and “New rubber tyres”, with positive variations of 39.8%, 24.1%, 23.2% and 17.7%.

The ranking of countries to which Basque Country exports were sent was topped by Germany (4,236 million), very closely followed by France (4,144 million) and at a greater distance by the Netherlands (1,806 million), the United States (1,732 million) and the United Kingdom (1,671 million). Between them, these five countries accounted for 50.2% of Basque exports. The coverage rate for Germany stood at 139.3%. For the rest of the countries, these rates stood at or exceeded 200%, except in the case of the United States, which, with 94.6%, did not reach the break-even point between exports and imports, thus creating a slight deficit.

Cumulative imports for the Basque Country as a whole amounted to 24,425 million euros. Comparing this figure in year-on-year terms, we see that it exceeded the equivalent for the same period of 2021 by 7,487 million. This increase (44.2%) was largely due to the fact that the province of Bizkaia (with imports of 14,934.9 million) registered an upturn of 56.7%, that is, a rise of 5,404.8 million compared to the same period of the previous year. Imports also increased in Álava, up 28.5% with 1,039.7 million euros more, and in Gipuzkoa, where there was a rise of 27.8% and 1,042.7 million euros more; the value of imports in these two provinces stood at 4,689.4 and 4,800.3 million euros, respectively.

Imports of “Energy products” were 97.6% higher than in the same period of the previous year and those of “Non-energy products” were up 29.9%.

Foreign trade of goods in the Basque Country during the first ten months of 2022 had a positive balance of 2,647.5 million euros, maintaining a positive coverage rate of 110.8%.
