LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. OCTOBER 2022
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 0.8% in October 2022
Compared to September 2022, however, sales increased by 0.4%
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.8% in October 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous month, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices were up 0.4% in October.
In relation to September 2022, sales at constant prices in the Food sector rose by 1.0% whereas in the Other products sector, in contrast, there was a month-on-month decrease in sales of 0.8%.
In year-on-year terms, October 2022 compared to 2021, evolution was negative in food, with a 2.1% drop in sales at constant prices. In other products, however, sales were 2.0% higher than those observed in October the previous year.

By province, in October 2022, sales at large stores and food chains in Álava and Gipuzkoa decreased in year-on-year terms by 4.1% and 1.0%, respectively. In Bizkaia, on the other hand, a 0.2% rise in sales was observed in year-on-year terms.
Compared to September 2022, sales in Álava and Bizkaia were down by 0.5% while there was a 2.5% increase in Gipuzkoa.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 4.7% in relation to October 2021. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people was up 0.8%.
BALANCE FOR THE FIRST TEN MONTHS OF 2022
In the first ten months of 2022 as a whole, the drop in the sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.2%. This decrease was a result of the 4.7% drop in cumulative sales in Food, given that cumulative sales up to the month of October rose by 6.0% in Other Products.
The cumulative variation for the year to date was negative in Álava and Gipuzkoa, with cumulative decreases of 3.0% and 2.7% respectively. In Bizkaia, however, there was an increase in cumulative sales of 0.1%.
Finally, the index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 2.3% in the first ten months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
