SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS. Hotels. JULY 2022
Visitor numbers to hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 31.2% and overnight stays by 34.8% in July 2022
Increases in visitor numbers and overnight stays from abroad stood at 97.2% and 118.9%, respectively, with overnight stays accounting for more than half (50.3%).
In July 2022, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 31.2% and overnight stays by 34.8% in year-on-year terms, according to Eustat data. The total number of visitors, which increased to 383,186, led to a total of 766,020 overnight stays. In June 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, these figures were lower: 328,080 visitors and 692,414 overnight stays.
49.6% of the total visitors and 50.3% of the overnight stays in July 2022 were from abroad (in July 2021 they accounted for 33.0% of visitors and 31.0% of overnight stays), following increases in visitor numbers and overnight stays by people from abroad, which reached 97.2% and 118.9%, respectively. In contrast, both visitor numbers and overnight stays from people from the rest of Spain have decreased slightly in year-on-year terms, at 1.4% and 3.0%, respectively.

13.5% of visitor numbers at hotel establishments for the month of July 2022 were recorded in Álava, 45.4% in Bizkaia and 41.1% in Gipuzkoa. As regards overnight stays, in Álava there were 91,912, 12.0% of the total; in Bizkaia they rose to 336,969, representing 44.0% of the total; and in Gipuzkoa they reached 337,139, also representing 44.0% of total overnight stays registered in the Basque Country as a whole.
All three provinces saw significant increases in visitor numbers and overnight stays in relation to the same month of the previous year. In terms of the number of visitors, Bizkaia reached a year-on-year increase of 41.3%, Gipuzkoa of 25.4% and Álava of 19.1%. In the case of overnight stays, the year-on-year variations were 41.9% in Bizkaia, 32.2% in Gipuzkoa and 20.9% in Álava.
By capitals, visitor numbers rose in year-on-year terms by 47.5% in Bilbao, by 27.9% in Vitoria-Gasteiz and by 22.8% in San Sebastián. Likewise, the increase in overnight stays reached 47.3% in Bilbao, 35.8% in San Sebastián, and, finally, 32.5% in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The average length of stay in July 2022 was 2.00 days in the Basque Country as a whole, above that obtained in the same month of 2021, which was 1.95 days.

Occupancy rates in July 2022 for the Basque Country as a whole reached 72.0% in the case of beds and 80.8% in that of rooms. In relation to July 2021, the increases stood at 14.4 and 17.3 percentage points, respectively.
Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate, reached 118.30 euros in July 2022 in the Basque Country as a whole, which was a rise of 26.7% compared to July of the previous year. In the case of Gipuzkoa, the ADR reached 150.22 euros, in Bizkaia it was 97.29 euros and in Álava it stood at 83.74 euros. By provincial capitals, the differences were greater, given that the ADR was 193.86 euros in San Sebastián, 107.15 euros in Bilbao and lastly, 70.50 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The RevPar, or average revenue per available room at the Basque Country level was 95.53 euros in July 2022, 61.0% higher than in the same month of the previous year.
