Overnight stays at hotel establishments in the Basque Country in June 2022 almost doubled those registered in June 2021
More than half of the overnight stays registered in June 2022 were visitors from abroad
In June 2022, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 79.6% and overnight stays were up 97.9% in year-on-year terms, according to Eustat data.
The total number of visitors, which rose to 309,162, led to a total of 612,621 overnight stays. In June 2021, the number of visitors and overnight stays stood at 172,095 and 309,532, respectively.
Visitors from abroad accounted for 47.7% of the total number of visitors in June this year and 50.5% of overnight stays. In June 2021, however, visitors from abroad represented 23.9% of the total number of visitors and 23.2% of overnight stays.

12.7% of visitor numbers at hotel establishments for the month of June 2022 were recorded in Álava, 45.8% in Bizkaia and 41.5% in Gipuzkoa. As regards overnight stays, in Álava there were 74,626, 12.2% of the total; in Bizkaia they rose to 273,984, representing 44.7% of the total; and in Gipuzkoa they reached 264,011, 43.1% of total overnight stays registered in the Basque Country as a whole.
All three provinces saw significant increases in visitor numbers and overnight stays in relation to the same month of the previous year, albeit to varying degrees. In terms of the number of visitors, Bizkaia reached a year-on-year increase of 110.3%, Gipuzkoa of 61.2% and Álava of 55.9%. In the case of overnight stays, the year-on-year variations were 125.8% in Bizkaia, 87.4% in Gipuzkoa and 57.9% in Álava.
By capitals, visitor numbers rose in year-on-year terms by 110.9% in Bilbao, by 62.8% in San Sebastián and by 60.9% in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Likewise, the increase in overnight stays stood at 135.0% in Bilbao, at 97.2% in San Sebastián, and, finally, at 59.3% in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The average length of stay in June 2022 was 1.98 days in the Basque Country as a whole, above that obtained in the same month of 2021, which was 1.80 days.

Occupancy rates in June 2022 for the Basque Country as a whole reached 60.7% in the case of beds and 72.8% in that of rooms. In relation to June 2021, the increases stood at 25.4 and 29.7 percentage points, respectively.
Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate, reached 106.12 euros in June 2022 in the Basque Country as a whole, and has seen a rise of 40.8% compared to the previous year. At a provincial level the values stood at 122.86 euros in Gipuzkoa, at 97.63 euros in Bizkaia, and at 82.31 euros in Álava. By provincial capitals, the differences were greater, given that the ADR was 156.65 euros in San Sebastián, 110.91 euros in Bilbao and 66.77 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The RevPar, or average revenue per available room at the Basque Country level was 77.29 euros in June 2022, far exceeding the 32.50 euros obtained in June 2021 and more than double that of the previous year.
