Hotel establishments in the Basque Country registered higher numbers of visitors in May 2022 than in May 2019, before COVID-19
Overnight stays increased by 168.6% in respect of May 2021 and reached a total of 562,700
In May 2022, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 153.1% and overnight stays were up 168.6% in year-on-year terms, according to Eustat data.
The total number of visitors, which rose to 301,976, led to a total of 562,700 overnight stays. In May 2021, the number of visitors and overnight stays stood at 119,312 and 209,506, respectively. In relation to May 2019, prior to COVID-19, 6,921 more visitor were registered, although the number of overnight stays was lower, at 11,722.
In May 2022, visitors from abroad accounted for 47.0% of the total number of visitors and 49.0% of overnight stays. A year ago, however, visitors from abroad represented 22.9% of the total number of visitors and 21.8% of overnight stays.

12.7% of visitors registered at hotel establishments in May 2022 were recorded in Álava, 45.7% in Bizkaia and 41.7% in Gipuzkoa. As regards overnight stays, in Álava there were 69,860, 12.4% of the total; in Bizkaia they rose to 256,440, representing 45.6% of the total; and in Gipuzkoa overnight stays reached 236,400, 42.0% of total overnight stays registered in the Basque Country as a whole.
All three provinces saw significant increases in visitor numbers and overnights stays in relation to the same month of the previous year. In terms of the number of visitors, Bizkaia reached a year-on-year increase of 172.5%, Gipuzkoa of 157.9% and Álava of 91.9%. In the case of overnight stays, the year-on-year variations were 191.2% in Gipuzkoa, 176.5% in Bizkaia and 96.3% in Álava.
By capitals, visitor numbers rose in year-on-year terms by 185.6% in Bilbao, by 171.9% in San Sebastián and by 82.2% in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Likewise, the increase in overnight stays stood at 208.8% Bilbao, at 227.1% in San Sebastián, and, finally, at 87.7% in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The average length of stay in May 2022 was 1.86 days in the Basque Country as a whole, above that obtained in the same month of 2021, which was 1.76 days.

Occupancy rates in May 2022 for the Basque Country as a whole reached 54.4% in the case of beds and 65.9% in that of rooms. In relation to May 2021, the increases stood at 28.3 and 31.9 percentage points, respectively.
Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate, in the Basque Country as a whole reached 97.45 euros in May 2022. At a provincial level the values stood at 103.19 euros in Gipuzkoa, at 95.21 euros in Bizkaia, and at 87.08 euros in Álava. By provincial capitals, the differences were greater, given that the ADR was 126.33 euros in San Sebastián, 108.09 euros in Bilbao and 68.74 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The RevPar, or average revenue per available room, at the Basque Country level was 64.25 euros in May 2022, far exceeding the 22.66 euros obtained in May 2021.
