Overnight stays in hotel establishments in the Basque Country more than tripled in February 2022
The bed occupancy rate stood at 38.3%, 22.2 percentage points more than the rate obtained in February 2021
In February 2022, visitor numbers at hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 270.1% in year-on-year terms and overnight stays were up 235.5%, according to Eustat data.
The total number of visitors, which rose to 179,635, led to a total of 318,456 overnight stays.
Visitor numbers and overnight stays for people from abroad represented 29.1% and 30.1% of the total, respectively. A year ago visitor numbers for people from abroad accounted for 15.8% of the total and overnight stays 18.0%.

13.6% of visitor numbers at hotel establishments for the month were recorded in Álava, 42.1% in Bizkaia and 44.3% in Gipuzkoa. As regards overnight stays, in Álava there were 46,291, 14.5% of the total; in Bizkaia they rose to 133,068, representing 41.8% of the total, and in Gipuzkoa overnight stays reached 139,097, 43.7% of total overnight stays registered in the Basque Country as a whole. Therefore, in Álava visitor numbers were up 216.6% and overnight stays 160.1%; in Bizkaia the former rose by 197.9% and the latter by 173.9%; and in Gipuzkoa the increases were 415.6% and 387.5%, respectively.
The increase in both the number of visitors and overnight stays was also very significant in the three provincial capitals. The rise in visitor numbers stood at 172.9% in the case of Vitoria-Gasteiz, 214.3% in Bilbao and 533.6% in San Sebastián. Likewise, overnight stays were up 137.2% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 219.9% in Bilbao and 574.1% in San Sebastián.
The average length of stay in February 2022 was 1.77 days in the Basque Country as a whole, below that obtained in the same month of 2021, which was 1.96 days.

Occupancy rates in February 2022 for the Basque Country as a whole reached 38.3% in the case of beds and 47.0% in that of rooms. Compared to February 2021, the increases stood at 22.2 and 23.0 percentage points, respectively.
Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate, in the Basque Country as a whole stood at 65.03 euros in February 2022. At a provincial level the valued are very similar: in Álava it stood at 63.34 euros, in Bizkaia at 65.24 euros and in Gipuzkoa at 65.41 euros. By provincial capitals, the ADR rose to 74.40 euros in San Sebastián, 69.25 euros in Bilbao and 56.56 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The variations in respect of the valued obtained in February 2021 are, with the exception of Bilbao, negative.
The revenue per available room (RevPar) at the Basque Country level was 30.53 euros in February 2022, far exceeding the 16.37 euros obtained in February 2021.
