The number of visitors registered in hotel establishments in the Basque Country quintuplicated in November 2021
The return of foreign tourists meant the figures achieved in November 2020 increased nine-fold
The number of visitors and overnight stays registered in hotel establishments in the Basque Country during November 2021 rose to 212,538 and 392,209, respectively, according to Eustat data.
Visitor numbers had therefore recovered by 413.8% and overnight stays by 333.4% since November 2020. The comparison with November 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, revealed that these figures were close to those ones. In effect, visitor numbers represented 93.1% of those of November 2019 and overnight stays 90.1%.
In Álava, there were 29,784 visitors and 59,482 overnight stays in November, 281.2% and 230.2% more than in the same month of the previous year, respectively. In Bizkaia, visitor numbers increased by 387.2% and overnight stays were up 278.9% in November 2021, reaching a total of 96,157 visitors and 174,577overnight stays. Lastly, in Gipuzkoa, the number of visitors and overnight stays stood at 86,597 and 158,150 in November 2021, following a year-on-year rise of 526.7% in visitor numbers and 499.0% in overnight stays. Of particular note was the increase in foreign visitors in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, having multiplied by 10 the value observed in November 2020.
The average length of stay in November 2021 was 1.85 days in the Basque Country as a whole, slightly below that obtained in the same month of 2020, which was 2.19 days. In November 2019 this variable stood at 1.91 days.
As regards the occupancy rates in November 2021, figures for the Basque Country as a whole reached 41.8% in the case of beds and 53.0% in the case of rooms. Compared to November 2020, the increases stood at 27.8 and 31.8 percentage points, respectively. In relation to November 2019, the bed occupancy rate was down 6.7 percentage points and the room occupancy rate fell by 8.8 percentage points.
Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate, in the Basque Country as a whole reached 77.58 euros. At the provincial level, Gipuzkoa stood out with 80.87 euros, followed by Bizkaia with 75.71 euros and Álava with 74.67 euros. By provincial capitals, the ADR rose to 92.88 euros in San Sebastián, 81.11 euros in Bilbao and 65.21 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz. All these figures imply some significant year-on-year increases, of 26.0% in Bilbao, 14.5% in San Sebastian and 13.0% in Vitoria-Gasteiz. In November 2019 the ADR for the whole of the Basque Country stood at 80,50 euros, 2.92 euros more than in November 2021.
The revenue per available room (RevPAR) at the Basque Country level stood at 41.13 euros in November 2021. In the case of Gipuzkoa, it reached 42.60 euros, in Álava it was 45.56 euros and in Bizkaia it stood at 38.64 euros. The percentage increase in respect of the same month of 2020 showed significant improvements, with 297.8% in Gipuzkoa, 182.0% in Bizkaia and 187.6% in Álava. In relation to November 2019, the RevPAR in the Basque Country was down 8.6 euros.
